Advice on getting my tubes tied

posted 19th Nov
I am currently pregnant with baby #4 and we are for sure done after this baby. I have had all my babies naturally, so if this one comes naturally also I have the choice to get my tubes tied the day after the baby is born or I could wait. I am having a hard time deciding which way I should go. I want to breastfeed and have lots of problems breastfeeding so I am worried about having surgery right after having the baby. I am worried about how much pain I will be in, when there is a good chance my husband won't be here when the baby is born. Advice please... is it really painful getting your tubes tied? How long did it take to bounce back? How long did you have to pump and dump before you could breastfeed again?

I have 4 children also, and I was thinking about getting my tubes tied. I wasn't able to do it while I was in the hospital having baby #4 because of the 30 day paper that I had to sign. I was induced before the 30 days, so I would have had to come back. If I would have been able to do it while still in the hospital, I would have done it. I probably would have never went back to have it done.

My doctor's office makes you wait 6-8 weeks after delivery to get your tubes tied. I had planned on having mine done after birth and he said that they dont do that anymore here unless you have a c-section.

I just had my tubal ligation a little over a week ago. I have 3 kids and we knew we were done. I had my surgery done 6 week PP. I wanted to wait. I did my research and found that doing it right after you give birth can increase the chances of it failing. I had surgery on a Thursday and by the weekend I was going about my business as I normally do. The worst part about it was the stupid breathing tube, it messed up my throat and it was raw for almost a week. But it's gone now.

I don't know if this helps, but i'll be getting my tubes tied during my c-section and was able to breastfeed immediately after with both previous surgeries.

I had a section and my tubes tied nov 2nd. You wont have to pump and dump. Let them know youre BF and you will have baby safe meds.

If you're going under general anesthesia, yes.

oh that terrifies me.... I read all the papers and nothing said anything about that. But I guess it makes sense. I assume i'd have to under general anesthesia since they wont do it after birth.

My ob told me that had i had a successful vbac, they would do the tubal at my 6 wk appt as an outpatient procedure. Awake. I would ask your dr the logistics of the surgery at their office

I haven''t had my tubes tied but I did have a tube removed the recovery wasn't bad at all. The gas they used to see what they were doing was extremely painful for about a week after

There is other ways to go about it. I just didn't want to be awake for it. I had never had surgery before and I was absolutely terrified of it. So it worked out quite good for me that the last thing I remember was the anesthesiologist telling me he was starting to push the meds in...when I woke up I was in the recovery room and everything was done and I was ready to go home lol

Thanks for all the input. Hearing it shouldn't hurt all that bad makes me feel better. Here (military hospital) I was told I could get it done the day after, but I would say my biggest worry about that is my milk not coming in if I do it right away. Since (fingers crossed) I will be having this baby naturally I would have to go into surgery to get my tubes tied and was told I would have to pump and dump for 24hrs. I'm the mom who lives at the lactation office and still can't make enough milk to not have to supplement with formula or donor milk.
