So early....

posted 19th Nov
My two year old wakes up between 6:30 and 7 EVERY morning. Yes I know that's normal. What isn't normal is that between 11 and noon he will start his 3 hour nap. If you wake him up after an hour and a half to two hours he will pass RIGHT back out. His bed time is at 8. He rarely ever goes to sleep right at 8 but he's at least laying down in bed. Well no matter what time he finally goes to sleep whether its 8:30 or midnight he wakes up at 6:30 or 7....no matter what. Then he is cranky and takes his nap earlier and gets cranky in the afternoon but still won't fall asleep right at 8.....

I would be thrilled with that sleep schedule! My girls are up between 4:30 and 5 every morning with no nap.

I'm not seeing why this isn't normal?

Oh lord... I'm sorry. The only reason it's rough on me is because my LO gets up at 3:30 to eat and then DH gets up at 5 for work so LO wakes up with the alarm and everytime DH comes in the room. DS will lay in his bed and play for the most part until I get up but there are some days when he just lays there and whines the entire time.... From 6:30 to whenever I hear him.....

Because he can go to sleep at midnight or 1 am and be up no later than 7 am...

That's pretty normal for how much he's sleeping during the day.

If you cut out his nap and moved his bedtime up to 7pm, he will most likely fall asleep right away and sleep a full 12 hours at night, making him not so cranky the next morning/day.

Little people just get up when the sun comes up, not much you can do about it unfortunately.

That's very normal. He has an internal "alarm clock".

I've tried cutting his nap. I made him get up after 2 hours and he passed out sitting up on the couch. Because he gets up so early he sleeps so long and then won't go to he's on time.....

That's what I thought but I also thought that at two he should be sleeping more than he is at night.

I don't mean waking him up 2 hours into the nap, by that time he's already relaxed and wanting to continue sleeping. I mean, cutting his nap out completely.

You need to cut it out completely. If you don't let him fall asleep in the first place, you won't have trouble keeping him up.

I can't do that either. I tried. He passed out in the floor where he was sitting. He was sitting cross legged, leaned forward, put his head in his hands and went to sleep. I was planning on not letting him nap that day because I wanted to get his sleep schedule back on track. I thought he was just playing so it was like 30 minutes until I realized he was asleep...

Then you need to engage him in something. Take him to the park, color, something that keeps his attention so he won't get bored and fall asleep. It may take a few days, maybe even a week or two, but he'll get used to it.

You can do it. You need to keep him busy, especially around the time he naps, until it's time for him to go to bed. Do activities inside, play outside, go to the park, etc. just keep him busy. It will take a few days to get the schedule on track but it will happen. He'll not only get a better nights sleep, but he'll be happier.
