Wow, I'm sorry you're going through this. Your sister as well. I can imagine it's pretty scary for her. She needs to tell past and present partners, so they can get tested as well (if she hasn't already). Also, she needs to get to a doctor to talk about antiretroviral therapy. They may or may not start right away. A support group could also be a wonderful resource. Best wishes to your family.

I would look for a local AIDS/HIV support group.

does she have health insurance? If not you can apply for state insurance...she will probably get it because she is younger than 21 and she has a life threatening disease that requires medication.

when does she turn 18?

since she's so young and (im assuming) healhty i would look into HIV studies and clinical trials. there's a lot of very promising trials out there and she's basically the ideal candidate for many of them

Thank you everyone! We go see her Dr. Tomorrow and get the official word on her viral count and at what stage she's in. She will be 18 in 3mos and her nurse told her she just needed to give them the list with numbers and that they'd call for her. I'm glad because I'm sure that would be the worst phone call ever and I wouldn't be sure if she could follow through with it... So, until tomorrow I feel like we're in limbo....

Well.... her viral load is not too high and her cd4 count is high which is great. We haven't been to see her official Dr. yet so we're waiting on the official results

Our plan was to stop her periods from coming so often with birth control so she went to get it today and.... well, she's freaking pregnant!!!! Yes, I'm serious. Now I'm freaking out and it's just so messed up of a situation! She's 6wks and she wants to keep the baby... I'm just trying to be supportive and help her keep her sanity. This is soooo much to take in right now....

my friend and his fiance were both hiv+ and have had two hiv- very healthy babies. there's a lot of precautions to take, but it can be safe for both mom and baby

That's what I told her. The social worker at the health dept pretty much just told her to abort. I'm pretty upset about it, I mean, really? She just told her not to even think about the baby and tried to give her some info on where to get one. And I feel horrible b/c up to this point I had been going with her to appts but I never even thought anything like this would happen and let her go alone b/c it seemed like it would just be a pretty normal thing. I told her that if she decides to give the baby up for adoption then I would take him/her. she's mostly just worried the baby will be hiv+ and she feels guilty for even having that possibility....
