Babywise book

posted 18th Nov
Hi guys!

I was wondering if any of you have heard of the book babywise. It's a book that is supposed to set your baby up on a schedule and help them sleep through the night. I was at my brother's baseball game today and one of the moms recommended it because at 8 weeks, her son was sleeping through the night and is on a tight schedule now. I was intrigued because Kylie wakes up every 3 hours or so throughout the night (which I know is normal and totally does not bother me! I know she will sleep through the night when she's ready, just got me curious.)

Well I was looking online and it is totally not for me. At all. She made it sound like such a good thing and it might have worked well for her, but it's not something I want to do for DD.

What is the Babywise method? The Babywise method indicates you shouldfeed on schedule every 3-4 hours (depending on age) rather than on demand from the first day of your baby’s birth. It is also routine-based that indicates that you should eat-play-sleep, in that order, every time. This means that your baby wakes up, you feed him, your baby plays, then goes to sleep and repeat this all day long. The book outlines how long between feedings at various ages and indicates your baby should sleep through the night from an early age (around 8 to 12 weeks, for the most part).

I am NOT okay with not feeding her when she's hungry.. Anyone else hear about this method or used it?

Babywise is an outdated and IMO terrible method.

This!!!

Also, that book, as well as other books promoting similar Methods, have been directly linked to failure to thrive in many babies. It's such a terrible book.

Eta: dr. Sears books are wonderful. They are Health based with a strong emphasis on nurturing and following maternal instincts. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I've heard 'Happiest Baby on the Block' is a good one too. IMO, babies all have their own schedules. I know i didn't raise my babies any differently and they all had different schedules in the beginning. My oldest slept moderately ok at night, but he was waking up every 4 or 5 hours until he was at least 6 months old. My middle baby was rough. He was up every 2 hours until he was over 1 and I stopped nursing. My youngest slept through the night almost directly home from the hospital and is still sleeping through the night as we speak.

When they leave this baby phase though, you'll be shocked how much you miss those middle of the night feedings where you get that one on one cuddle time.   I'm not saying sleep isn't awesome, because it is. Some of my best memories though are of my babies in the middle of the night watching horrible sci-fi movies and praying for sleep.

I wouldn't feel pressured to try to force your baby into a schedule this early. That other mom is either extremely lucky or exaggerating to show off her son.
