I don't know, it mainly doesn't make sense for atheism to be a religion for me. It's really because I see atheism as the belief in which all kinds of religions are false. I could be very wrong, though. I'll admit that... :/

Pretty sure when I check "none" on things that ask me my religion, that really means none. I have no religion, believe in no gods.

I'm not going to a science lab every sunday to worship a petri dish.

If every "belief system" is somehow a religion now, then sign me up for "I believe vodka is superior to whiskey"

Well, let me ask you this: Is it offensive in any way, if it's labeled a religion?

This is a defensive post from OP, that stemmed from another thread. Isn't it just kinda .....inconsequential? I mean, who cares what people label it? Kwim?

Actually, it kind of is, in a way. We don't do anything that constitutes a religion, most of us really shy away from religion, it's not something we prescribe to and labling it as such is kind of a slap in the face. I don't believe in a god - i don't believe in " religion", so why the hell would you call my non-belief in something a religion? Thats incredibly ignorant. ( please excuse spelling / punctuation , i am on my phone and have fat fingers lol)

Okay. I get it more now. It's the association that the very word "religious", carries.

I'm just not easily offended and it seemed like a quirky argument in the other thread.

But hey, if you don't want it called a religion...then I won't. Again, it's completely inconsequential to me.

I'm generally not, either - but arguing with me about what *I* believe in and what I believe in is or isn't IS offensive. I know what I am and I know what it's called, and people trying to tell me I belong to a religion when I really, really do not like organized religion is bull.

Of course it is inconsequential to you, but to a lot of people, it IS offensive. It's like if I were to just refer to all Christians as Mormons or something - no, their not and I am sure a lot of them would be quite annoyed.

Fair enough and you are right....I'd have backed off of the argument much more quickly.

It's not offensive so much as it is ridiculously inaccurate.

Right. Or all Christians are Catholic. Or whatever. It's not offensive per se, its just a stupid and ignorant statement.

If Atheism is a religion then I just can't win! Lol. It's the religion part of believing in God that offends me the most. I am so against organised religion. I am totally fine with people wanting to believe in a God and wanting to pray etc but I just don't think going to a man-made building and being told by a man (or woman) how to believe in your God makes any sense whatsoever. It's the religion not the belief in God that I find just so strange. So I am anti religion. I also don't believe in God. I am an Atheist. If that makes me religious then we have come full circle and I am what I hate the most.
Now I used words like hate and anti, etc but that doesn't mean I'm gunning for all people who do believe. They were just strong words to describe how much I do not want to be in a religion.

I am an atheist and no, atheism is not a religion. Religion is man-made. There was no religion before man made it aka technically everyone was "atheist" since they had no concept of god or belief in god.
As for the Supreme Court I think atheism is only defined as a religion because we have the same 1st amendment rights as any religious person does. Ours just is freedom FROM religion rather than freedom OF religion.
