re: Is Atheism a religion?

lol, never thought about it like that, but that's pretty funny.

Me, too.

That's why agnosticism makes so much sense to me.

No, I cannot say, without a doubt, that there is no god, or gods. Nor can I say that there is. I kind of fall somewhere between spiritual, or ignosticism, in the grande scope of agnosticism. And I have my moments wavering between the other types. haha

See for me, it makes more sense to say atheist because... 1. what are the chances that we figured out lifes greatest mystery during a time we knew NOTHING about the world around us. and 2. Sure there could be a god out there, but then there also could be a flying spaghetti monster, the chance of that is soooo slim that itd be ridiculous to say, yes, thats a possibility, what would even be the point of mentioning it, now I will base my life around that possiblity.

It's just tooo ridiculous to say there MIGHT be this or that, there COULD be anything, but I won't even bother mentioning it because to me the chances are ridiculously slim.

Haha...

I guess we're just kinda... opposite in some sense?

I consider myself a skeptical optimist. I am absolutely willing to think there "may be", but trust me, I will be skeptical about it, and question it to no end.

I refuse to say there "absolutely isn't", because it's my belief (haha, belief) that the human brain is very limited.

I sometimes feel that way, too - but then at the end of the day, I'm like "nahh, their not there".

(Also--- side note. It's almost, to me, like saying there aren't any living beings on any other planet. There are so many smurfing planets out there that I feel it's kind of egotistical to think we know enough to say there "isn't other life out there". Basically, same applies to religion, for me.)

See whats funny is I totally believe in life on other planets. I am pretty convinced that this new Mars Rover is going to find evidence AT LEAST of some kind of life.

Yeah, I find it unbelievable that there wouldn't be other life out there.

I don't know, necessarily, if it's in our solar system, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was.

I don't think we will find beings in our solar system, I find that hard to believe or we probably would have come across them at some point, but they have found tentative proof of water on Mars, I haven't followed the story right up to the minute, so it may have changed, but water = a huge possibility of life or sustaining life.

It blows my mind that this is happening in my lifetime.

Atheists use science AS their religion. It is a belief system, as is Christianity, Judaism or Hinduism.

I would say that Atheism IS a religion, with science being the "standard", just as Christianity is a religion, with the Bible being the "standard".

We don't use science as a religion.
A lot of us love science, yes, but plenty of theists love science too--and hold it in the same regard as we atheist types.

Not all Atheists put their stock in Science, either, though - thats my point. Buddhists are technically atheists....if you ask 3 different atheists what they believe you will get 3 different answers.

I have to say, it's made to sound like there's some choice to be made between science and religion.

There isn't. Unless they're young-earthers, in which case...I'm sorry education has failed them.

If theists aren't into science---if that's strictly an atheist "thing" to where that's our "religion"---I suggest all theists immediately cease and desist from benefitting from it. Medicine, technology, oh---the internet? If science is our religion, and you don't subscribe, maybe you should log off.

That is, unless you can be two religions at once. In the case of Christianity, I'm pretty sure that's a big no-no.
