Baby cereal

posted 18th Nov
LO is 4 months old and he has reflux. To help him keep things down a little better I was thinking of mixing up some rice cereal and giving it to him. Do you think that's a good idea?

We did that for DD for her reflux. Call his pedi and ask how much.

Talk to his pedi first. Usually that is the ONLY time they would suggest putting it in their bottle because it is considered a choking hazard. But, I had to do it with DD and it worked well with her though.

No I meant like spoon feeding it to him. My pedi is....contradicting everything I was told with my first and everything the doctors at the hospital told me with LO. She's at a different office and she told me the first time I saw her when LO was 2 months I was doing things wrong

Well, I guess you could try and see if he is interested in eating it with a spoon now. Don't always let your pedi tell you that you are doing things wrong though, listen to them, but also do research for yourself and decide what you think would be most beneficial.

Is your LO able to sit supported and not wobble their head? If so I would say it is okay to spoon feed. I wouldn't too often. Or just a little little amount because it will take from the nutrition. But for reflux it's recommended.

I did cereal in the bottle at a month old for his reflux and then started spoon feeding it to him at 3 months. He's now almost 4 months and his pedi has us starting baby foods. So I don't see a problem with spoon feeding cereal at 4 months. Try and see if he's interested.

Well we have Medicare and the doctors I know and trust have a full case load and aren't taking any new patients. The pedi I'm going to told me not to give LO any kind of juice when he is constipated or put cereal in his bottle. The pedis from the clinic I took DS to told me the opposite. So its all rather confusing. I know from experience about the juice and the cereal. Just wanted to ask about spoon feeding it because DS went straight to baby food and skipped the ceral all together.

He wobbles a little but he ir trying really hard to sit up on his own and every time you hold him up to like if he was to stand he IMMEDIATELY straightens out his legs and tries to support his weight lol. And thank you!

They are probably saying that about the constipation because in young babies under 6 months constipation can be from not having the digestive enzymes to digest thing other than breast milk and being fed things other than breast milk. So giving them other things like cereal can cause more problems.

I don’t know your situation; I am just saying that in some babies this happens. Hope ti works out

its very true it can cause constipation it did for my son so my doctor told me to give him a bottle of warm sugar water a day to keep him regulated and it did but the cereal was the only thing that helped him not spit up so much

My son is 8 weeks old and his pediatrician just told us to put him on cereal for his reflux. She said 1tsp per ounce, so far it is helping but he has gotten where he sleeps all the time and isn't eating as much.

If he can hold his head still that's what's important. So if he is in a highchair or bumboo whatever you're feeding him in, and his head doesn't wobble. it's the worry of him choking.

Well we tried some last night and he won't swallow it. He just holds it in his mouth with a look like what the hell did you just give me woman?! So we are just gonna stck with it being in a bottle for now
