school and religion

Ok so a while back the government took away the right to for christians to pray in school. My brother got suspended Friday for it. But other religions get to keep that right.

Also there was a big debate about weather or not "under go" should be taken out of the pledge of allegiance. I find both of these things sickening. Especially now that I have kids. I teach them its ok to pray everywhere at any time.
What happened to freedom of religion. Yep we have freedom of religion. Oh but not in school. What kind of sense does that make? I fond it completely wrong that schools are allowed to suspend kids because they pray. Wtf? My brothers friend said his mom had cancer. My brother said he would pray for his mom and started praying and a teacher happened to catch him. How is that wrong? Thats exactly what they are teaching kids. That praying is wrong. But according to the government we still have freedom of religion. Just not in school. Whats next?

Does this bother anyone else? What are your opinions?

Your family should speak with a lawyer. That's a violation of his rights.

No one is stopping you from practicing as a christian. However public held prayers that the school allows violates the establishment clause.

Suspending him is a little overboard. If they have that big of a problem with it, they could have just asked him to not do it again and that be the end of it.

That's pretty harsh punishment for a little kid.

I don't think kids should pray during class and I think religion should stay out of the classroom..

No it's not.

If they're praying privately the schools can't do anything about it. How could they control their thought? They shouldn't be shouting out loud, praying for random people to hear though imo. There's a time and place for that and it's not at a school. If you want your kid in a religious environment then you should send them to a private Christian school, not a government ran public school.

"Under God" was an addition to the pledge and I have no issue with it being taken back out.

I dont think saying a 2 minute prayer in between classes is wrong at all. Its not disrupting anyone and your not disrupting the class. Why is it such a big deal?

How did people know he was praying? He was kneeling in the hallway?

It was extreme that he was suspended but the reason religion can't be in schools that are government funded also have to follow separation of church and state..we are not a nation founded on Religion, we're a nation founded on freedom..

religion has nothing to do in the schools.

i was totally pissed when they wanted (here) to make all kids take a religion class (just like math etc) i was like smurf are you serious<?


and i think if it wouldnt bother anyone, that wouldnt happen. i do think its a bit harsh, but it all depends on what is written it the schools policy.

I don't think prayer should be forced upon kids in schools, and I don't think anyone should be forced to say "Under God", but doing it on their own will should be their own prerogative. That may actually be illegal to suspend him for that.

Religion should not be in public schools - period. NO ONE should be praying in a school, at least not so that anyone else could tell and god in any form should be mentioned at all. (Unless it's history class and it's relevant and not given as a personal opinion.)

Totally agree with this.

If he was doing it during class then its his own fault.
When I was in school, the groups were allowed to practice their religion at lunch, outside the school (and I can't remember where the went during winter) and they weren't allowed to practice their religion anywhere else.

Not just Christians either. No praying of any sort during class and/or where other students can see/hear you. Because its my freedom of religion to not have to hear it
