We're getting a live turkey.

posted 18th Nov
So this year I found a local "farm" that raises pure and natural golden breasted heritage turkeys.

They want $4 a pound for them after processing and is estimating that they'll be around 20lbs.

My dad wanted to go all out this year, and decided that we would butcher our own turkey, also avoid processing fees.

For my family this is normal. For my husband's family, well they think we're all a bunch of crazy Italians.

Getting to the point here. My son is 6 and 1/2, he knows what we're doing. That we're going to pick up a live turkey, take it to poppa's, where he is going to kill it and we're going to eat it. We've been preparing him for this because we're also getting chickens and should one be a rooster, we're going to be butchering it as well.

Well he has a whole list of disorders. So this is something he's very excited about and has hopes that he is going to get to cut the turkey's legs off(we've already told him that poppa is going to be doing everything but he has high hopes).

We're doing it Tuesday, and now I"m suddenly over paranoid. Even though we live in the country, this may not be normal for other kids at school. And I'm sure he's going to tell them all about it, which may get him into trouble.

So I was thinking of telling his special ed teacher, just give her the heads up to redirect him should he discuss it. I don't expect him to watch the turkey being butchered, that is not the plan, the plan is for the kids to stay in the house. I don't like seeing the animals being butchered personally, but he may want to see it after it's dead.

What do you all think? Should I tell her just in case, or hope he doesn't say anything?

I'm definitely thinking so too! She's from the south, but I don't know if that's normal where she comes from either.

I don't think it requires a talk with his teacher at all. Idk. My bf lives on a bunch of land and her kids watch and participate in the butchering of their livestock, it's normal in rural areas I think.

Well, i'm from farm country, and its normal around here, but to have him telling other little kids, it might scar them kwim?

My son can take it to the extreme though.

Blabbering on about blood and guts.

He's been telling us for a week that he plans on "cutting the turkey's legs off and stabbing it in the eye" He just has a very active, disturbing imagination.

And I'm afraid he'll over elaborate what ACTUALLY happens.

Yeah, we're on the outskirts of a small town. Almost country, but technically in the city limits.

I'm afraid the kids will get worried. Especially since they're all kids in the specialized learning center.

I had to deal with a month on how all the kids were "vampires and drinking blood" even though they weren't

So yeah, I worry just a little.

You definitely need to heads up the teacher

I would definitely tell the teacher. I know I am VERY sensitive when it comes to death (even though I'm not special needs) and hearing that so young would have made me very, very upset and horrified.

I'm not saying it's just the special needs kids.

But can you imagine 7 kids hyped up and freaked out about killing animals?

Then he goes to the general ed class which is a mixed class and you have 60 kids that could get freaked out.

It would be wide spread panic!

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to mention it to her so she can watch for him to start talking about it and redirect the conversation before it gets too out of hand. You're so lucky you get fresh turkey for Thanksgiving, by the way. lol
