Is my newborn normal???

posted 17th Nov
Maybe I'm being paranoid and hormonal or something but I'm a bit concerned about my 3wk old daughters sleeping habits. The problem being is that she doesn't. She's always wide awake and only sleeps maybe 10 hrs a day and everything I read says that newborns sleep an average of 18hrs a day. I swear my son slept nonstop until he was 2 months old. But even the night after she was born she stayed awake all night either nursing or just laying in her bassinet looking around. Family and visitors alway comment on how strange it is for her to be so alert, and a few people have even said it's creepy-which really bothers me. She has also been rolling over and lifting her head and turning it side to side since day 2 which makes me feel a bit better but still even that seems strange to me. She is ebf and I don't drink caffeine or take any meds that would affect her. She seems content except for a little reflux. I just worry that there may be something neurologically wrong...? Or that she has trouble relaxing and getting comfortable...?

DS is 4 months in 2 days and he has been like that since day 1. He sleeps great at night now, but he is always wide awake and alert. People said the same thing about him.

This is him about an hour after he was born, you can kinda see his eyes open

I believe it's normal. My youngest dd was like this. She was very very alert. Too busy looking around to nap. Even now at 8 months she is to fascinated with life to nap much. She will start passing out and see something.. Anything.. A light or a shadow and she's up on all fours smiling huge and wide awake.

My son was like that but he is 9 months now and sleeps a little more now, less than most though. 9-10 hours a night and 2-3 30ish minute naps a day.

Some babies are like that. My 5 month old was like that and still is. He only sleeps maybe 6-8 hours in 24 and it's really hard to get him to sleep.

He is a really good baby. loves to play, not huge on naps, but sleeps 12 hours at night. I lucked out and both my kids have been greats sleepers since about 4 weeks old. But he is definitely thinking he is missing something if he naps during the day, lol.

everything you have described is EXACTLY my son. ALWAYS awake. cat naps instead of sleeps. ever since he was born his never slept. this last week his been sleeping through the night which is good. but still awake all day. it's lovely cause he keeps me company during the day while other halfs at work! lol. he also has been holding his head up amazingly well since day 1 and has been rolling over since week 2. some babies are more foward and alert than others.
I've always thought that my little man is way too forward to be a new born. lol!  . his 7 weeks now.

Thanks!!! I can't believe he's gonna be 4 months  . He used to be so itty bitty, and now he's this beast, haha.
