General Anesthesia During C-section?

posted 17th Nov
I had an adverse reaction to the spinal during my first c-section that caused me to feel as though someone was sitting on my chest. I had to be given Versed.
I expressed fears of this happening again during my scheduled c-section with this baby, and he recommended I be completely sedated this time.
If you were sedated during your c-section, how did it go? Did baby come out ok? OB said they don't like completely sedating because it knocks baby out too, but seems pretty certain he can get her out quickly and that it's the safest option for me.

Baby was absolutely fine. Only thing that sucked was trying to come to and wanting to hold my baby but being so out of it. And I hated that I missed the first cry, cleaning baby up...

I pray that I never have to do it again. I don't want to be put under and miss everything. Plus, by the time I was with it again, she was suckling on people's necks wanting to nurse!

Baby was fine, but I had a lot of issues afterwards. I almost bled out (I have a bleeding disorder) and was sedated for longer than expected, so I didn't see LO right away. Then I had an ileus for about a week and it reeeeally sucked.

Sedated as in completely put out? I was put out and everything turned out fine. Baby was in prefect health. I had an issue with my epidural only working on half my body. If it's the safest option, I wouldn't worry. Your Doctor's got it covered. Good luck Momma!

Oh man I can see how that would be rough.
I'm glad my fiance and mom will be there and hope that I come too pretty soon after.
Even remembering that feeling of feeling sufficated
causes me to feel completely terrified. It was the most awful feeling I've ever experienced physically.

What is an Ileus?

thank you. That is reasuring.

I'm sure he knows what's best, he took great care of me during my delivery with my now two year old, and during the D&C I had a year later.
Just a bit nervous I guess lol

You'll be fine.   My momma was there holding my angel until I was with it enough to hold her.

You have to do what's best for you and baby. If that's you going under, then don't be afraid.

Yea, I had to be fully sedated because I can't get a spinal. They told me that they had to get the baby out very quickly with the sedation. They got her out and she was awake

Only thing that sucked is how groggy I was & I slept forever lol. My mom brought me the baby when I was still half way out of it, but I dozed off while trying to breast feed lol. They put the baby in the nursery & when I woke up I was alone in a room.   I freaked out looking for my baby...I couldn't even reach for the thing to call a nurse bleh..I finally got it & called the nurse in and got her to get me the phone so I could call to check on my daughter. Then when I called they told me they were sending her to the NICU because she stopped breathing for 20 seconds and was having issues with her blood sugar.   Then while in the NICU they found out she had an infection.

What blood disorder do you have, if you don't mind me asking. I have a blood disorder too & for some reason pregnancy made me some what normal in the bleeding department lol. I only lost a liter of blood which is normal, they were freaked I would lose too much and they had special medicine & blood on hand just in case.

Thank you for the support
I know he's right. I was crying out and thrashing under the influence of a complete panic attack last time. I supppose being sedated ahead of time is better than the distress for me and baby resulting in Versed anyway.

Thank you for sharing your story with me.
I was lucky that my now two year old didn't need any NICU time. She was born at 39 weeks exactly with low blood sugar, but that was fixed right away. They brought her to me within a few hours post birth and my little princess had a perfect breastfeeding latch <3

I had to have an emergency c section, whilst completely sedated as I wouldn' dilate past an 8 and he became stressed. I was given two epidurals (during labour before they decided I needed a c section) neither of which worked at all, though they didn't believe me! They only believed me when they stabbed me with something and I screamed.

For the baby the sedation had no effects as far as I could tell, though I didn't get to see him until 14hours afterwards because I hemorraged and needed a transfusion, then had to get clots removed plus I had a lung problem (I can never do anything simply!). He passed all the tests straight after birth with full marks   .

He's now six weeks and has no problems at all, the only down side is I was kept away from him for 2 days because of my condition so I never managed to breastfeed as he was bottlefed whilst I wasn't there and refused to latch, although I think a lot of that was also due to my state of mind after the delivery. ( I totally wa sn' prepared for a section and teh aftermath etc.)

I don't see any reason that it would cause extra suffering on the baby and possibly less than if you take a bad reaction to the epidural. Of course the ideal is to avoid medication etc but honestly my wee one seems perfectly happy and even when I saw him the first time I saw no signs of adverse effects. He was out pretty quickly I think within like 15 mins max, it's hard to know exactly how long it took but really for the baby it was over quickly.

That is good to hear. It was a rocky start with breastfeeding because of my DD being in the NICU but she always latched well. I would spend most of the day with her in the NICU and I would breastfeed on demand & then when I went home I would pump every 2 hours and bring her in the milk I got out of pumping, so she could have breast milk while I was gone. Then my milk was slow to fully come in & I had to feed her formula & breast milk...but after a month and a half she was fully breastfed and I still am fully breastfeeding her, she is 9 months now.
