Cry it out

posted 17th Nov
Ok my 1 year old is having problems goign to bed. Is it wrong to let her cry it out, or if its ok how long?

Define "having problems"...

If you are going to do CIO, research sleep training techniques.

People have differing opinions on this subject on whether it is right or wrong. You'll have to do your own research and decide what is best for you.

Have you tried setting a strict bed time routine so that she knows what to expect at the end of the day? Personally, I don't believe in CIO at all but to each their own.

We tried CIO with my kiddo, but she puked all over the place. So, we still rock her to sleep. It works well for some and not at all for others. We used or attempted the Ferber method.

I was thinking the same thing. There hasn't been a backlash yet, so she might be in the clear.

I tried CIO for DD and it isn't for us. I found ways to soothe her if she has trouble at bed or nap time. I found that giving her time helps too. Even though she really has no perception of time, if I give her a 30, 15, 10, and 5 minute warning, nap and bed times go much smoother.

I did it, somewhat with my 1 year old.

We did 15 mins crying and then went it, reassured him/calmed him down ((never picking him up out of the bed)), then tried again. It took, maybe, an hour the first night. Second night it took half the time, and third night he went to bed by himself.

We also make sure we have a regular routine, a night lite, and plenty of his favorite stuffed animals.

If you are uncomfortable with leaving him in the room to cry, you can sit on the floor facing out the door, and just read. He will not be so extreme to cry and eventually get bored and go to bed.

Is she over tired, maybe? Does she nap during the day? I know when my one year old is over tired it is a bit harder to get her to sleep, but she doesn't throw a fit.

cio worked for us. LO was 10 months old and wouldnt sleep anywhere but my arms. we even put a tv in her room to have her stay in her crib without screaming, but it didnt work. she would only sleep in my arms. 4 days ofCIO and she was back to her schedule. The first night she cried for over an hour and 45 minutes, second night was 30, third night not even 10 minutes. I went in every 3-8 minutes to lay her back down. it was heart breaking, but her and I both needed it tosleep well and be happy in the morning.
I was raised by an old fashioned family, and CIO never hurt any of us. If you are comfortable with it, ignore the ones who aren't. People have let their children CIO for yeeearrrrrsssss and they are all fine.
