Could I get in trouble for this??

posted 17th Nov
When my son was born he was in NICU for 5 days because of severe meconium aspiration and they thought he might have an infection since I had a uterine infection and high fever during labor. The medication he was on can cause deafness. They tested him and he passed his hearing screen. When he was discharged they gave me a referral to an audiologist and said to get his hearing retested as soon as possible. He is now 8 weeks and hasn't been retested. I made an appointment for him that is on Wed. but now there is an issue with the insurance company and they will not accept the referral from the hospital. The Dr. was supposed to fax a referral to Children's and call me back and they never did, and I forgot to mention it at his appointment Thursday since he got his shots and there was a lot going on, it just slipped my mind. I know he can hear, practically everything startles him and sends all limbs shooting up into the air.
I was telling a friend the issue I am having and she told me I should be worried about CPS coming after me for neglect. Is this true? Can I get in trouble for not providing adequate medical attention because he hasn't had this hearing screen yet? Will the hospital check into if I have taken him yet? Now I am stressing over this.

They will probably keep calling you to go. Will CPS be involved, that I don't know. But issues like this doctors are very adament about.

No you can't get in trouble... There are no signs of neglect... It's not like u did it on purpose, they recommended that u get him retested but doesn't mean you have to...

I really don't think CPS will get involved because you didn't have his hearing checked a second time. That's your decision as a parent.

I haven't received anything, and when I called his Pediatrician about a referral they never bothered to return my call. I called Children's directly about it and the person I spoke with told me the test that he needs can be performed until he is 5 months and he acted like it wasn't a big deal, but I want to get him tested.

It might be worth it to call your do. On Monday to get the referral done. Just to get the test out of the way. And hearing loss can be on different levels so he might be a little hard of hearing. I doubt CPS will get involved, anyway. Nothing would change between getting it done now and later, except if it is diagnosed they will most likely start some type of therapy program to help him Ashe grows so he doesn't fall behind in milestones.

unlikely CPS will get involved. But.. if CPS ever DOES get involved... they could also use this against you if you keep letting it go.

ust because he can hear.. also doesn't mean everything is ok. he could startle from hearing in one ear.

all of that said.. what medication was he on? we put babies on gentamycin.. it can cause hearing loss, but we test in the hospital. OUr babies aren't forced to follow up with an audiologist.

Yes, and he has had an appointment for a few weeks with an audiologist and at first the insurance company said the referral from the hospital was fine. I called just to make sure a couple days ago and now they are saying no, they need a referral from his pediatrician.

That is what he was on and the test he passed was the AABR I believe.
