Does this seem right?

DD is now a week old, and we have had many issues with breastfeeding so far, but I don't want to give up. She has seen her pedi already 3 times (for weight check and jaundice) we have seen a lactation consultant and I had an at home nurse come once. All of them have told me that she should be eating between 8-12 times a day...which she does, she eats about 8. But it seems that she feeds forever!

I do have a rough time getting her to stay awake, so now I undress her every time I go to feed her to help, but it still seems like she is eating for a long time. This morning I started feeding her at 2am, during that feeding she was naked, I changed her in the middle, and burped her and switched sides and the whole process lasted until almost 4am! She fell asleep for a while and then decided that she was hungry again at 6am and that time she was on the boob until almost 8am.

If she falls asleep on the boob and I try to wake her up, (most the time she does) but if she doesn't within 5 minutes she is up and fussing for the boob again. I don't want to deny her eating (nor would I ever) but it just seems like she is want to eat too much. If she is eating 8 times a day for 2ish hours every time, then that's 16 hours out of a 24 hour day!! It just feels like I have no time to even take care of my 3 year old. But it also doesn't seem like she is truly starving because she is giving me tons of wet diapers. But there are also times when we are done that she has managed to soak my clothes, and there have even been a few times that I have seen her spit a mouthful out so I am still slightly worried that she might not be eating like she should.

Does this seem normal, or has anyone else had this issue?

I haven't nursed in quite a few years but it sounds normal to me. I read the other day that a newborn will usually have nursing sessions of an hour.

You don't use a paci? I used one with my daughter for when she'd sit there and play instead of nursing.

Yea when they are that young, they nurse pretty much all day. It made me miserable, and a little depressed. Around 3 months (i want to say, i can't remember) DD started feeding for like 15 mins and be done. And now at 7 months, she doesn't nurse as often. I think her pedi said she should be eating 5 times a day now.

Thank you ladies! It just seemed like an awful lot of time spent on the boob, lol. And we do have a paci, but after a few minutes she will spit it out and start to fuss.

My babe was attached to my boob pretty much constantly for the first month and a half.

She just turned 3 months and she nurses for about 20 minutes every 2-3 hours. It gets better, hang in there!

My baby is just over a week old and her feeding sessions last about 45 mins to an hour, sometimes longer, i'm trying to exclusively breastfeed but it just seems like she is not getting enough because after an hour feeding she is still crying and the paci does nothing to soothe her. And I also have a 3 year old and it's hard trying to give him the attention he needs with all the feedings i'm giving her.

Now he's 4 months on he nurses every 2-3 hours for 10 minutes, I promise it does get better, something to do with them being more efficient at getting the milk out and your boobs being more efficient with making milk. It does take a while but they're not starving, just working hard as getting the hang of getting milk out more efficiently and building your supply up.

Should I worry about her spitting the milk back out? Yesterday she did it twice that I actually saw and then 2 other times when she was done and I pulled her away I noticed my shirt below my breast was soaked.

Nah she's probably just comfort nursing or eating to build your supply but may not actually be hungry, so she spits it back up. I'd only be worried if she did it a lot, like at every feed.
DS did it a few times but he stopped when he stopping nursing to much.
