Anyone get rid of their cats?

posted 17th Nov
Anyone get rid of their cats because the baby was going to be here soon. I hear the be careful's a lot, and don't touch the litter box while pregnant. Which I don't. But Has anyone ever thought it best to get rid of them? I have one rescue fell out of an engine at my SO's work. And we've been pregnant together! She finally gave birth 3-4 weeks ago, 4/5 kittens were still born. So I have 1 kitten and one cat. Both been checked and healthy. And are inside cats indefinitely. The biggest thing I've heard is toxicplasmosis. Which is pretty much all but ruled out when they're inside cats. And the cat possibly smothering the baby, which obviously she'd be moved out of our room/rooms when baby comes. I couldn't bare getting rid of her and her baby   she was my pregnant buddy... but of course if it's safest for baby I'll do what I have to. I just can't see all the pregnant women who have cats getting rid of them if their were no other reason than that a few literally few people have said it's a bad idea. The vet say's it should be fine but to keep baby's stuff sterile of cat fur until we know if they're allergic. But same with anyone who has dogs... I'm just torn

I wouldn't get rid of the cats. If they are inside cats you really don't have to worry about toxoplasmosis unless you have rodent problems in your house. An if you keep the doors closed when baby sleeps you don't have to worry about the cats smothering it. I would not worry about the cats.

No. I didn't have a cat when I was pregnant but I do now and wouldn't get rid of it because of a new baby. Just take the proper precautions and you should be fine.

I just had mine declawed(sp?), so baby doesn't get hurt. I also got them fixed so they wouldn't spray or anything. (I have two males).
They are the happiest cats in the world! And they absolutely love the baby.
When baby is in his bouncy seat or swing, they go up to the seat and bounce it/ lick his head but never lay on him while hes sleeping or anything like that.

Everyone and their mama told me to get rid of my cat before my son was born. I told them all to go to hell   I never got rid of her and I'm glad I didn't. She loves my son and he is so entertained by her lol.

Thanks! I've had her for three months she was injured and we thought declawed but she had her claws ripped out, so her and I have been really close I was on early bed rest and we spent 6 weeks in bed, and then we noticed she was pregnant too! And her little baby kitten we named her Daisy   Cause we'd already planned on naming our little girl Lily. I've never really bonded to animals well and I couldn't think of even possibly giving her up or the baby <3 Thanks guys. And I definitely will take all the precautions nothing I would hate more than I told you so's, AND especially if something happened to baby and it came down to being my fault I'd never forgive myself.

We had two cats when my son was born, and they were absolutely amazing with him...we had 0 issues. They were inside cats. We did ended up getting rid of them like a year later, but it was for different reasons and we had no choice...I still miss them.

I'm sorry that sucks. I was a full time nanny this past year before becoming pregnant, and the family had two cats and the baby boy absolutely loved them, and he wasn't allergic. Then we all moved, and the cats were outside/inside cats, I told them that were a bad idea. And shortly after one brushed up against him, and it was straight to the ER with a severe allergic reaction. That's what scares me most. I would hate for her to bond with animals and have to pull them away from her before she understood why.   sorry you had to get rid of your cats.

Yeah, we never and I mean never let them outside. And we kept them up to date on everything. Luckily my son was too little to remember them so now he doesn't miss them or anything, but we do want to get another pet soon.

NO. I have never gotten rid of any pet because a baby is coming. They are members of my family.
If your cats are inside only and have been checked out by the vet and healthy, then your ok to with the little box, just wash your hands after. There is a bacteria that most out cats have that passes in the poop that you have to work about. If your still worried just wear gloves and a mask when you change the box. It's simple.

Unfortunately I had to move my cat outside when my baby was born. I didn't want to but felt I had no other choice. It's like she went crazy with jealously and started peeing on everything. I didn't want my son to play in cat urine.

Luckily with her just having kittens, maybe jealousy wont be an issue. And the litter box thing is simple. SO does it now   Lol.
