Speech delay?

posted 16th Nov
When do you start getting worried that your child has a speech delay? Peyton says maybe 6-8 words at 15 months. He had his check-up last Wednesday and she said I need to work with him more because he is not saying much as he should. I talk to him all the time and am always telling him the names of things. He just likes to say everything is kitty. Anyways, when should I worry?

Addie mimics a lot, but she only knows a handful of words by heart...I was actually going to bring it up to her pedi, but she understands a LOT so I'm not worried. That's the important thing. Babies learn a lot more than they can say.

My doctor referred me to a speech pathologist when my son was around 18 months. He was probably saying 15-20 words at the time.

The thing is I know he understands a lot of words. I tell him bring me a diaper and a lot of other little tasks and he does them, he just says kitty a lot and doesn't much of anything else.

Autumn didn't say A WORD until her second birthday. She's 2.5 now, speaks in sentences, and won't shut up, lol.

Peyton says daddy, mama, doggie (sometimes), kitty, nunu (for my mom), and mamaw (for MIL). That's pretty much it.

My son was talking about that much or less at that time. My son didnt really start talking much at all until about 18 months.

it's kinda hard to tell if they have a speech delay when they are that young. we didn't get LO evaluated until after he turned 2. he was saying about 40-50 words but not putting words together to make sentences... he probably could have started speech therapy way earlier but our pedi always told us LO was right on track for his age so weren't worried

if you are really worried, you can go through the early intervention program through your state (it's free) and they can guide you where to go from here..

The only reason I even started to worry is his pedi told me he should be saying more and I need to work with him. But I do. I am always telling him what things are and reading to him.

most kids have to go to speech therapy at some point, it's no biggie
just get him evaluated and see what they say.

That's kinda dumb of her to say that and make you worry.
I would wait a few months, and if by 18ish months you think he is behind, then look into speech therapy.
