If your kid has an IEP.

DS' teacher want to refer him to this place because he has an IEP, his speech issues, and his lack of control with focusing makes him eligible.

What would you think if this was your kid?

My nephew has an IEP, and goes for help with it. What type of place is it? Is it for counselling/help, or is it like a school for special needs kids?

This is from their admissions page.

"
  • Clients must be a child or adolescent age 4-20 at the time of referral; for intensive in-home or therapeutic day treatment; client seeking Community Mental Health Support must be at least 18 at the time of referral
  • Is at-risk for out-of-home placement due to abuse, neglect, emotional difficulties, and/or behavioral difficulties;
  • Returning home from a residential facility, foster care, or correctional facility and need to transition back into the home successfully;
  • Having difficulties with establishing or maintaining normal interpersonal relationships to such a degree that they are at-risk of hospitalization, homelessness, or isolation from social supports;
  • Intensive In-home and Therapeutic Day Treatment client and at least one adult guardian who is willing to participate in the service."

Uh, none of that describes my boy.

My 3yr old son has an IEP, Im beyond grateful for it. I knew he needed speech therapy and everyone said "hes fine" I didnt listen and got him in. He is now getting one on one attention, his teachers say hes doing great and will only need it for this year. But Im still grateful he get this little extra help.

I would be a little apprehensive but wouldn't completely ignore her suggestion. I would check it out and see how DS liked it.

Maybe he's acting differently at school...? Did she give you a reason on why she suggested it?

His teacher said twice a week someone from the service would come to school and stay by his side all day ( Not sure if they would go to speech therapy with him or not) They might come to the house and take him places.

I flat out refuse to allow them to come and take him somewhere. I don't want a stranger driving him anywhere.

What she said is in the OP. She said she wants to refer 4 other kids and my son doesn't have a behavioral problem.

So, she just wants to refer him just because he has an IEP, speech problems and he has issues focusing. These services are for "seriously behaviorally and/or emotionally disturbed" kids. I would be talking to his teacher. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

The ONLY thing I can think of, is maybe she wants you to utilize all the services your son is eligible for?.. Though, none of his "conditions" (for lack of a better word) meets the eligibility they list on their site...?

THIS is exactly my problem! Plus, he's not even four yet.

My son (3 years old) just got and IEP recently due to his speech. He has many ear infections as a baby and actually failed a hearing text at 18 months. After tubes his hearing is back but due to the time he lost hearing, he is behind. He is above in every other area they evaluated him for in his age group. He takes the bus to school in the morning is home by 12:00. I have never heard of the speech therapist taking the child out places alone.. I would look into that part.. But overall its best he gets the help he needs now to catch up rather than wait and fall further behind. I wish you and your son luck

If his teacher has nothing better to say, besides "he's eligible". I would tell her no thank you, continue forward with what he's already doing. No need to expose him to that if its not necessary!
