re: Hostess Closing

So sad for those families. We've been on the "you've lost your job" end, and it is a difficult place to be.

What precisely were they looking for that you would term "greed"?

The average salary was $50k for the bakers (the ones that were on strike). The company filed for bankruptcy protection back in January and figured out through fancy accounting math that if they cut 8% pay from each of these employees, everyone would be able to keep their jobs and would be paid $40k a year instead.

The workers didn't like this and started protesting. They were told that if they went back to work Thursday at 5pm, no harm no foul. They didn't because they were holding out for that $50k back. So, through their greed, the company can't bring itself out of the hole and everyone loses their job.

I wouldn't feel bad for them. They were told if they went back to work by 5pm yesterday, no one would lose their job. They decided to stay on strike.

I would not say that an employee protesting a 10k a year reduction in pay is greedy.

Thats ridiculous.

I feel bad for the families. It isn't "little Sally's" fault.

I didn't realize that the company had given them that salary option though. That, I do think was silly for them to have turned down. 40k is better than 0k.

Eh, I see both sides.
The company should have worked with them. You can't keep taking their pay away more and more and watch your pockets grow fatter. The people will only put up with it for so long.

They got an cut in pay. They weren't striking because they wanted a raise they think they deserved. It might not seem like a lot to everybody but for someone living pay check to pay check that would have hit them hard.

How is that greedy?

Sad that people are more worried about losing their treats than people losing jobs and more unemployment.

It is a lot, I agree.

Dang it, I'm torn now.

DH would have accepted any kind of salary cut to keep his job when he lost it.Going from "x" to zero was hell.

They were told back in January that the only way the company would be able to stay open is if they took the pay cut. They decided to try to hold out for $10k and cost 18,500 people their jobs. That's greedy.

Yeah, they've changed over the years IMO.
Plus, they charge way too much. Why would I pay 4 dollars for a box of ding-dongs when I can get some for 2 or less of the off brand that taste the same or better???

Yup.
I've been buying those 24 oz. loaves in the yellow...there's like a few brands. They're always on sale and are soft..lol

Their pockets weren't "getting fatter". They had already filed for bankruptcy and were trying to save the company.

But they kept taking their pay.
If you budget for a living of 17 dollars an hour and it gets cut to 13 or less, plus your healthcare has jumped up, you're not going to be able to pay your bills...

At the same time, now they won't be able to pay them at all. It sucks all the way around. But I guess they hit the big guys where it hurts. They were forced to close.
