Sleeping on stomach

posted 16th Nov
Is it okay to let your newborn sleep on their stomach is you are in the room keeping an eye on them? My son had his shots yesterday and is miserable. He basically has not slept since getting them. He has napped off and on but only if he is on his stomach on my chest, but the slightest movement wakes him up and sends him into another crying spell. I feel so bad for him and want him to get the rest he needs. I have someone who keeps telling me to just lay him down on his stomach since I am up doing housework and can keep an eye on him. Is this safe? Would there be signs if something started to go wrong? I want him to sleep but I am afraid of SIDS.

Even being in the room, I wouldn't be comfortable

I would do it if you can watch him. Heck, when we were babies (in the '80's), sleeping on the stomach was recommended. Then when DD was born (5 years), we HAD to buy one of those wedges so she would sleep on her side. Now, it's back only. I'm sure in a few years, the recomendation is going to change again.

DD slept on her stomach at around a week old. It was the only way she would sleep.

It personally freaks me out until they can roll over on their own. But I do know a lot of Moms do it, so it's pretty much what you feel comfortable with.

Yeah, I was born in 88 and my brother in 82 and we slept on our stomachs so its my mom who is telling me to put him on his stomach. The thing is I read online that most infants who die from SIDS now are infants who typically sleep on their backs and a different caregiver puts them on their stomach. I can keep a close eye on him but there will be times that I am in the kitchen or dining room and he will be in the living room in his pack n play.

Does he have any head control? DD could lift up her head and turn it side to side, I'm sure he would be fine.

If he is sleeping on your chest, I would be OK - my son used to sleep like that all the time when he was tiny. I probably wouldn't put him on his stomach on his own, though. I hope he feels better!

Yes, he is 8 weeks old so he has pretty good head control. He can lift it up and he will turn it from side to side on his own when hes laying on his stomach.
