Cooking a whole chicken in the crock pot?

posted 16th Nov
I've got a recipe for drunken chicken in the crockpot, and it says to cook on high 4-5 hours. Is that long enough? I've never made a whole chicken before so I'm kinda skeptical. I thought it would take longer.

ALSO, here is the recipe I'm using. I plan on adding some garlic, rosemary and carrots, but that's about it. Anyone else have some suggestions?

  • 1 3-4 pound chicken, cleaned and patted dry
  • 3 tablespoons + 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided
  • 6-8 small potatoes, halved
  • 1/2 a large onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 12-ounce beer

If it's completely thawed, five hours should be fine

Okay thanks   I bought it thawed yesterday so no worries there. I was all set to get it started, but DH won't be home until like 7 so I guess I will wait a few hours lol

Takes me 2 hours in the oven and 4-6 hrs in the crock pot (depending on size of bird)

I like the texture of it in the oven better though.

What kind of beer do you use? I want to make this but trying to find a good, flavorful beer to pour in.

Honestly I've had it a few different ways it always tastes the same to me, but I'm not a food critic lol. I'm using Coors Light bc that is what we have in the fridge

I'm making this right now! I put Yuengling in there because that's what I had and felt like finishing off [I have 16 ounce cans and it called for 12 ounces] but I was considering buying some Woodchuck cider for it. It smells super good! I stuffed 3 garlic cloves and a lemon in the cavity so I hope it's still as good as the comments make it sound!
Thanks for the recipe

That sounds good! I used 3 garlic cloves also, but I put them through the cheese grater and put them in the bottom. I dropped some carrots down in there too. It was REALLY good!

I used minced garlic with the potatoes and onion and then an additional 3 in the chicken butt   I love me some garlic. I didn't even think about carrots! I think I'm just going to do corn on the side. Nice 'n' easy.

That'll be enough time! Usually I cook it in a sauce and then when it's almost done, I take it out, shred it, and put it back in for a bit.

Just wanted to say that this was the Smurf! I loved it. Barely had any leftovers which sucks but it's a good sign. I loved the beer taste mixed with the garlic. And the chicken was super tender. I cooked it for closer to 5 hours to make sure everything would be done and the potatoes would be soft and mmmmmm. Definitely making this again, so easy!

I know right, it was great! We had some leftovers bc I made it on DH's first night home from work and he doesn't eat much after being on a bus for 10 hours lol. But then we made sandwiches for lunch the next day with the chicken
