Infants with Cats

posted 16th Nov
I am excepting my daughter to be born November 24th. I was wondering if my daughter will be in any harm living with two cats. Do you know if its dangerous for a newborn to be around cats? Also is their anything I new to worry about with my cat and daughter?

We have a cat and there wasn't anything to worry about until DD started crawling, because she'd follow the cat around and harass him. She's been scratched once and now she's starting to learn to be gentle with the cat. Just have to keep an eye on them when you're daughter's near them.

Some ppl say ya by going by old wives tales. But I have two cats and well DD is 9.5 months now but my oldest cat was here when my now 4 yr old sad born too. We had no issues at all.

Some say a.cat wants the warmth of baby and will lay on their chest then lick the milk from there mouth. I think it depends on the cat itself. Kwim?

Just make.sure it does not have worms.and it should be fine

i have two cats. my daughters 13 mo now, but iv had these cats for years. They never hurt her or caused problems. I just closed the door when baby was sleeping so they didnt crawl into her crib with her, but they would lay next to her during tummy time and everything. DD and the cats are BFFS now. lol

As long as she doesn't end up being allergic, it should be fine.
The only thing to watch out for is that cats like to lay around babies for their warmth and sometimes accidentally suffocate the baby. That doesn't mean don't let the cats around the baby at all, of course. Just exercise caution if the cats are laying around the baby.

We've had our cat long before I got pregnant. She was with us during my pregnancy so I think that helped her to adjust to the idea of a little person being around. Because animals DO know when a woman is pregnant. Our cat is not declawed, but has all her shots. You can get your cat's claws trimmed, like with dogs and its pretty cheap, like 12 bucks.
We've never had ANY problems with our cat acting out towards the baby~ she's actually VERY accepting of the torture Aerilynn puts her through lol. She likes to jump on her, sit on her head, pull her hair out, and chase her around flailing her arms and screaming.
Yes its very interesting. But of course all cats are different, so just watch them. Usually when a new baby comes home to a house with cats, the cats don't really want to have anything to do with the baby. Usually.
Just watch, and be careful. Introduce the baby to the cats and vice versa.
Before baby comes home, you can also get your cats used to baby sounds by going to Youtube and finding videos of babies crying or laughing~ or whatever.

I also have 2 cats. One isn't interested at all on baby while the just like smelling her stuff. As far as I know cats pose no danger they are just curious animals. I had my sister in law take a receiving blanket that she wore in the hospital take it home so all the animals ( we have 3 dogs also) could get used to her smell

I have 2 cats, DS is just about 4 months. They are fine around him. Pretty indifferent. One of my cats likes to sleep in his crib, when he isn't in it during the day, but I caught him eating the nipples off his pacifiers, so I won't let him in there anymore. The myth cats suffocate babies is just that, a myth. Just don't try to keep the cats away if they are interested, they might feel threatened by the new addition.

Depends on the cat. N if baby has allergies to cat. Mine slept in the crib w my youngest n even though she curls on my chest against/around my neck she slept w her back pressed up against baby's side. And the milk thing? I've never had a problem w that but as baby was old enough for sippy cup w water my cat would try to steal it away hoping it would leak. Never did so she was sol.

I have a cat. She will run up to DS and sniff his face and get him all excited but if she ever lays by him she stays at least an arms length away. She was trained to stay away from his stuff while I was pregnant so I think she takes that training into consideration when she lays near him. Haven't had a problem yet.

Our cat hates DD and she acts out on the furniture >< She's pretty much shredded one arm of one of our older couches. She pretty much stays in DH's office now. She might wonder out if DD is asleep

Ya my 6 yr old cat loves sleeping with babies. lol He did with my now 4 yr old and my now 9 month old. Just lays at there feet or close to their sides. lol Never on them. They also never tried to lick their mouths to get milk or anything. Even when lo plays on the floor he sits with her and watches her play, its really cute, or when she is on her back he curls up to her and puts his head on her belly and lo attacks him and he just sleeps lol .

My lo is 15lbs and my cat is over 30lbs lol

My cat destroyed our new leather furniture because shes jealous of our kids lol

She loves them no doubt, never really have issues other than her acting out.. though you have to be careful. My infant likes to smack her in the face because he likes to slap things lol and she went at him once but hasnt since, she just runs when he starts doing that. My toddler has been bit once or twice for stepping on her too

As long as you have a brain about it, you will be fine - like don't let the cat sleep in the room with the baby and that kind of thing. My mom owned a pet store when her first two kids were born, there were always animals in the house, we survived just fine.
