Birthing Classes

posted 16th Nov
Are they really neccessary?

My doula and doctor seem to think so, but I don't have the time for traditional birthing classes.
I thought about buying the hypnobabies home study but I can think of sooooooo many other things that money could go to, seeing that we just bought a house 2 weeks ago and Nuggets room is completely EMPTY.

Ugh but I don't want to ruin my VBAC chances because I was too cheap to pay for the classes.
How neccessary are they? Is it worht $150??

Help me ladies, I really really really really really want my VBAC and will fork over the money in a heart beat if its neccessay.
I'm also 27 weeks now, have I waited to late?!?!

Sorry this is all over the place.

We didn't take any classes with my first which was a hospital birth.. But this time we are doing a home birth and my midwife requires that you take classes.
I guess if you are planning on going naturally it will help teach you other methods for pain management.. But if you are having a traditional birth I really don't understand what they can teach you that you wouldn't already know?

I'm going to a hospital but I am shooting for a natural birth. Most of my docs patients go natural, so I will request nurses that are used to this.

I never took any, and am glad i didnt. The birth part went super fast for me both times. You kind of figure out your own way to breathe. And the whole thing kind of comes natural to you. Plus nurses and dr's are there obviously to tell you what to do. If you feel like you need them though for the security or whatever then do it.

ive had a natural birth with no classes. i read some hypnobirthing books and stuff but i had it down..

sometimes whats taught in class isnt gonna work and your body just does what it wants to make you comfortable..
good luck!

Normally I would say its a huge waste of time and money. But given that you are attempting a vbac and have not previously experienced a natural labor and birth it might not be a bad idea. Although I think just reading up on natural births, signs of distress, and pain management theories would do the same thing.

I had a scheduled c-section with my twins before I even had a BH. So I have NO idea what to expect, and honestly I'm quite terrified. But I want my VBAC more than anything.
Do you think reading a few books will suffice? I love reading.

i think so. get spritual midwifery by Ina May.. love that book, it has stories about the hippies on the "farm" that birthed in empty school busses. it gave me confidence.

I love that book and bring it with me everytime im in labor. also i downloaded free hypnobirthing stuff i found online and on itunes.. like the recordings to hypnotize you.

when i had my last baby, what got me through it was knowing MILLIONS of other women birth their babies in feilds and hug trees and they do it ALONE, they are so strong and i know i am too, my body is built for this. im shooting for a home or birthcenter birth this time.

What u really should be asking ur doula ppl is if there are any specific vbac birthing classes or points in the class that cover vbac that's worth spending the money on it. I'm in a similar boat- wanting a birthing class strictly for vbac mamas though. I took a free class w my 1st n it wasn't all that helpful. It didn't teach pain management through breathing or any of the useful stuff. I never took one w my 2nd bc I could research it on my own but after the 1st it was csect downhill. I'm trying for my 1st vbac n have yet to talk to my new midwife bout it, but ill be asking what they recommend.

In that case I would say it wouldn't hurt to do them.. I went in knowing I was going to get the epidural, since I was already five cm, I got it within a hour and was bed ridden. If you plan to do natural I think the classes will help give you the push to keep that mind set once you have the tools to keep you comfortable

My doula is bringing me books this weekend, and I know she is bringing one by Ina May but idk which one. Thats what I keep telling myself.
Where is the free hypnobabies stuff??

I want a home birth so badly, but I don't have $3000, and they aren't covered by insurance in GA.

They only have one VBAC class offered here and its through the hospital. Its only one day though, I'm going but I don't think it has anything to do with actual birth. Just hospital protocol.

Darn!! Hey that's good to know to is hosp policies. Nothing like being in labor n then told they encourage this or that n then find out firsthand they sure as heck do not! I think u could teach urself most of the stuff like research it on ur own w certain guides by ur midwife.
