If your toddler wakes up

posted 16th Nov
in the middle of the night, what do you do? I don't mean like just wakes up and cries/needs to use the bathroom but really wakes up and won't go back to sleep?
We've been having this problem with DS since trying to get him back to a normal bedtime and I'm just not sure how to go about dealing with it.
He's been up for three hours now and we've just been sitting/laying in the semi-dark on the couch or in his bed. I thought no stimulation might help, but I feel like I'm going to be here in the dark forever.

I usually just put my son in my bedroom and lock the door, turn on the tv and let him destroy my bedroom. I usually just go back to sleep and if he needs anything he will just wake me up. Usually my husband stays up with him though so I don't feel too bad going back to sleep.

Sometimes they'll wake up in the middle of the night, and cry for like a second or two, and then they're both knocked back out.... If one wakes the other up, though, they'll get up, have a cup of milk, and we'll put them back to bed. Our toilet wakes them up when we flush it, but they usually put themselves back to sleep.

She has to be...thats just horrible parenting!

OP It just depends, if he seems truly upset then Ill let him stay up for a bit. If not I just read to him or rub his back till he goes back to sleep.

I tried the whole back rub and reading a book thing but it didn't help. He seemed tired in the beginning, and still does, but he isn't sleeping. He's not misbehaving or anything, he's just lying in his bed awake. Earlier he kept asking for the lights to be on and wasn't happy when I said no but that's the worse thing he's done.
Normally I'll let him play for a bit or lie down and watch TV, but I thought this might get him back to bed faster.
It's so frustrating. If he goes to bed before midnight these last like two weeks, he wakes up like this. I just keep telling myself it's good practice for when the new baby gets here.

I am not going to lie. I have fallen asleep before while I was suppose to be watching him at night and have actually locked the door. That has happened twice when DH was working super late. Usually it depends why he is up so late. If he is sick or had a nightmare I just cuddle with him and try to comfort him until he falls asleep. If DH is home, he is the one who stays up with him since DH goes to sleep super late.
