If LO has severe dairy sensitivity...??

posted 16th Nov
Can I drink lactose things? Cause that's still milk right? I EBF and she has extreme sensitivity to milk proteins. I eat nothing dairy otherwise she screams for hours   . I only drink almond milk. But is lactose okay?? I ask because I'm in love with eggnog. And I'm slipping into a depression that I can't have it!! It's my favorite part of the holidays, and if I can have it, it will be the #1 reason I'm not losing any baby weight till February. Lol. But DH found lactaid eggnog! I was ecstatic! But I see its still made from milk. So is it a no go??

lactaid has the lactase enzyme in it. So it's good for lactose intollerance, but bad for allergy.

Sorry mama, my LO was lactose intolerant and couldn't even tolerate my breast milk.

My newborn LO has a milk protein allergy & luckily i didn't even risk breastfeeding this time. (he is on a prescription hydrolysed formula and the milk proteins are already partially broken down so its easier on his gut)

Breast milk is actually higher in lactose then cows milk.

It doesn't matter what you eat/drink (lactose wise), your breast milk will always have lactose in it.

The only way to stop her screaming that i know of .. and to ease her tummy is a lactose free formula (whey dominant)

Hmmm... Maybe she has neither the allergy, or is lactose intolerant. Because she can tolerate my breastmilk if I only eat turkey, oatmeal, crackers, almond milk, and eggs. But if I eat ANYTHiNG dairy, beans, and certain veggies she screams like she's in pain and it lasts a long time, and she won't sleep for more than 15 min and always wakes up screaming. I feel so bad. But if I avoid all that she's a happy girl

Milk protein is not the same as lactose intollerance.
Milk protein allergy is an allergy to milk.

She said her LO does fine when she (mom) doesn't drink or eat dairy products and mentioned a milk protein sensitivity. So I'm sure she's fine breastfeeding and not switching to formula.

She asked if she could have lactose free eggnog. Which still has milk protein in it. So the answer would be no.

I think you didn't read her whole post. Maybe the first line?

If she doesn't do well with other milk, she probably won't do well with lactaid milk.

Ugh... No eggnog.
What. A. Bummer.
Well I guess I will have to set aside 1 day to pump and dump and just give her bottles of stored breastmilk. I'll drink like a whole carton to satisfy my craving for the entire season.
Thanks ladies.

LOL i actually did read her whole post, but it was a quick skim read while my toddler was getting into the pantry haha!! (which would be why i focused on the first sentence while i quickly read the rest)

And yes, i do know that a milk protein allergy isn't the same as a lactose intolerance, both of my boys have had gut issues (i saw a gastroenterologist today for my newborns milk protein allergy/reflux and my eldest was lactose intolerant with reflux - both had colic)

OP, as for your question RE: breast milk & milk protein allergies passing through to bub..I honestly have no clue since i've not BF'd this time.. you may be best checking with your DR

If you think your bub is more settled when you don't eat certain things then stick to what you know.

OP, found an article that may help

It says usually most babies dairy allergy is mild enough that you can consume a single dairy item & it wont upset bub.

Severe cases mean you need to stay off all dairy.

Silks egg nog if freakin delicious! No dairy!

My first was like that, no fun. Hope she grows out of it some. Mine got better towards 6 months..he is still lactose intolerant with milk, constipation issues. But, you learn to live with it.
