Prop65 cancer warning

posted 15th Nov
So, California has a law that people/companies/business have to attach a warning label that says "this product contains a chemical that in the state of California has been known to cause cancer, birth defects, reproductive harm" if it indeed does....(There is a whole formula to determine if it needs the warning label)

I was unaware of this till I ordered a backpack for my DD off amazon and it came with that tag attached stating just that.

Upon further investigation I found it that the warning is listed on almost everything (since pretty much everything causes cancer)

Lots of people are just saying it's no big deal. But the tag doesn't give specifics on what the chemical is, or how much of it is in the product. (waiting on a response from the company)

Would you keep the product?

I feel weird just cutting that tag off and giving it to DD even if the risk if very little...and it probably in something else she already owns.

I would keep it.
I bought wood floor the other day and there was a smurfing notice on the box that this floor is known to cause cancer in California.

Whatever.
Its smurfing wood.

Yeah, I would keep it. It's probably the water resistant chemical they spray on outdoor backpacks that makes it have that warning label.

There are 600 chemicals that require a Prop 65 label. Hell, even PVC is on the list and they make your pipes for drinking water out of it.

Ugh I know. It's pretty much EVERYTHING.

It seems like a very non beneficial over reactive statement to be just labeled like that with no further info.

Right. Like could it cause cancer if you touch it or would you need to lick it or ea a chunk of it? It's not very specific.

Here's a funny one. Starbucks in California have to have a Prop 65 warning because coffee may cause cancer. So do potato chips, french fries, and toast.

California's Proposition 65, also called the safe drinking water and Toxic Enforcement Act, was enacted in November 1986. It was intended to protect Californians from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Manufacturers make the decision to place a warning label based on their knowledge of the types of chemicals in their products.
