My daughter was spiderman this year. I don't force anything onto her and her toys are a mix of dolls and dresses to almost every marvel character. I don't see the point of stressing one type of toy over the other.

If my next child is a boy, he is more than welcome to play with all of her toys, her dress up clothes, and if he's old enough I'll paint his nails too.

I don't know if anybody watches that show What Would You Do, but they had an episode recently where a mom and child were in a halloween store and a boy wanted to be a princess for Halloween. The mom said no, that was a girls' costume, and he made a big scene. All the bystanders sided with the mom.

When it was a girl that wanted to dress as Spiderman, however, it was completely different. People were much more likely to think it was okay for the girl to dress in the "boy" costume.

That's really sad. I saw a little boy this year dressed in a princess costume and another one dressed as a butterfly. No one said boo about it.

I don't believe in gender roles. I remember when I was turning 5 or 6 I wanted a Barbie doll AND a Tonka dumptruck. My mom got both for me, but so many people told her not to get me the truck because it was a "boy toy". Uhm, dafuq? There is no such thing as a boy toy or a girl toy. Just because it is marketed toward a certain gender doesn't mean it's just for them.
Also I find it insulting that toys like kitchen sets are marketed to little girls and toys like tool sets are marketed toward little boys.

We don't believe in gender roles either.

4 girls, 1 boy right now. We try to keep a balance of toys and don't put "girl" or "boy" labels on them, and at almost 3, DS plays with everything. So do his sisters.

Oh, and he looks great in his purple and blue princess Jasmine shirt   He LOVES it and I don't care if people stare at us when we're out, it makes him happy! He's never asked to wear a dress other than dress-up play, but I wouldn't care if he did. We don't have many dresses anyway though, and my girls are jeans-and-t-shirts kinds of kids.

Hey, I'm with you OP.

Last year, my son went as Snow White for halloween. It was the costume he wanted, so we got it for him (and we did a whole theme with it... my daughter was one of the dwarves, I was the evil witch, and husband was the huntsman... it was awesome).
This year he was Spiderman... and my daughter was Plex from Yo Gabba Gabba (instead of Foofa or Tuti, the "girl" characters). Big deal. ;-)
