16 month old wont self feed. Help!

posted 15th Nov
My 16 month old DS will not self feed. Every time I try to get him to self feed he throws his food in the floor. I have been trying to work with him on it for months, but I am at a loss. The doctors arent concerned with it because he could self feed if he wants to, but he is being stubborn. Its so frusterating, especially because everyone I know who has kids his age tell me how he should be doing it by himself. I know he should be, and I am trying, but I cant afford to feed my floor 3 servings of food before giving up and feeding him myself. Seriously what am I doing wrong? Is he just not ready yet? Someone please give me some insight. TIA.

have you tried letting him have a spoon as your feeding him so he can try if he wants?

Yeah, he just throws it in the floor too. He wont keep it in his hand or on his tray. He does the same thing with his sippy cup also.

I know it doesnt sound really any better...

but I have to have lo on my lap with me holding the bowl for him to do it. Then, when he trys to throw it down, I can just pick it up next to me and tell him no. He seems to eat better that way...

Straight to the floor. I have been trying off and on again since he was 10 months old, and consistantly since he was 13 months old, so it is seriously getting frusterating. I have tried with foods he loves like bananas, and he throws them down. At first I thought he just liked to feed the dog, but now I have been keeping her in a different room while he eats, so I dont think that it. Any time a peice of food makes it in his mouth, I praise him alot which he really likes, but then the next peice goes back to the floor. Its strange because he is really independant and normally refuses help with everything.

I asked a friend who's daughter use to do that and she said she would make herself something to eat and her Lo then she would sit down at the table with her chair facing her daughters highchair. she would give her daughter her bowl and spoon and keep a bunch of extra on the table everytime her daughter threw one to the floor she would hand her a new one without ever even looking at the one on the floor once her daughter no longer got the reaction of mommy is going to pick it up and then feed me she lost interest and I guess started feading herself.
