4 month old/water in sippy?

posted 15th Nov
I have been exclusively breast feeding my daughter until about 3 days ago, we started rice cereal. We today we found a sippy cup that we thought she could handle and we filled it with water to see what she would do with it. Well she LOVED it. I can't pump enough to give her milk in it all the time we want to use the cup for days I am called into work and Dad can use it with her instrad of the bottle. My question is. . . Is it even ok to give a 4 month old a few onces of water a day to get her used to it. I don't think it would "hurt" her but no positive either.
I was thinking no more than 4 ounces a day but I don't want to fill her belly with water and have her not hungry for the breast milk and be lacking nutrition because of it. So there's the ramblings in my own head about it any in put is welcome

It really won't hurt her but it isn't good for her. Some people give their kids water at 8 or 9'months but most at 12 months

Watching - I heard a certain amount was okay before a year but I have no idea about what age or how much.

Her Kidneys cannot handle the water yet. Small babies bodies don't know how to process straight water. It can knock their sodium levels out of balance, resulting in Seizures and even death.

At 4 months, I wouldn't give any water but I didn't give anything other then milk until 6 months. I think we offered up to an ounce of water some days around 6 or 7 months.

*Edit* - I didn't research it very much, just enough to know that it replaces breastmilk, the same way food does and is not needed.

Actually it's really easy for young babies to get really sick from drinking water. Really small babies have died from drinking too much water and its not great for their digestive system. They don't need anything as far as hydration other than breastmilk or formula until a year. My doctor always says not to give water until 6 months and then only a couple ounces a day.
If I were you I would talk to your doctor before making a habit of it.

Huh!? Why in the world would they tell you no water until a year????? That's ridiculous! As long as they are drinking what they should with formula/breast milk... My son started drinking water at 4 months old.

but then what age do you start juice because I was thinking better a little bit of cold water as she is teething and I wasn't going to give her any juice at all until after a year old 2 if I could help it and even then I was planning on watering it down

Because there's a very real medical condition called Intoxication that can occur and it at times fatal. Babies Kidneys are not designed to process water until at the very least 6 months, but a year is better.

Small amounts should be okay, but a sippy full is probably not the best idea.
