employees paying for mistakes

posted 15th Nov
Was watching spongebob with the girls and the episode where the guy comes in and gets a refund because he said his order was imcomplete came on. Mr Krabs said it's going to come out of spongebobs paycheck.. It just got me thinking.

If an employee makes a mistake at work that ends with the company losing food or money, do you think the employee should have to pay for their mistake if it were their fault or should the company take the loss?

I know at McDonald's if they hand you the wrong order they have to pay for it.

Well I work retail and my husband in food and the company usually just takes the loss. No one pays back a chicken nugget that fell on the floor or if I dropped a candle.

Company oversees everything. Or should.

Companys problem. Not employee.

I guess it really just depends. How long the employee has been there, what it was they screwed up.

not really asking what the company does, but what who you think should pay

I think the company took on the liability of the employee when they hired them. So if they made a mistake, they are an extension of the company and the company should pay for the mistake the extension of the company made while representing them.

If it's a mistake with product, the company takes the loss. If it's a cash shortage issue, the employee should be responsible.

im waitress and i had someone dine and dash on me...twice. once when i was bartending. they tried to tell me i had to pay for the meal because i wasn't paying attention. um...no. i refused to pay for it so they comped it off. I dropped the ticket off at their table...pre bused it...and while i took the dishes to the kitchen they ran out. and the time i was bartending i was also having to do carry out...guy left when i went to the back to get someone elses food. so i dont feel it was my fault

I had to pay back money if my drawer was short. Most it ever was was $5. But hell I never got the money if there was an overage!

Wow, really? I didn't know that.

To the OP: I guess it would depend on the size of the error and what happened (gross negligence or the employee didn't know the correct procedure or maybe they were just goofing off). I'm inclined to say no, and if the error was big enough maybe the person should just be fired.

Not at the McDonald's near me. I worked there for 4 years and was a manager.

At my family restaurant the servers have to pay for whatever they mess up. Giving wrong food away, breaking dishes or charging too little for a guest...etc

i used to worl lawn and garden at sears and we got hit with a horrible snow storm one year. I was working that morning. I was supposed to leave at 4 but the person after me called off because of the storm so i had to stay the entire day (they eneded up closing at 7 instead of 9). we cal slammed with people coming in for snow throwers and they only had me 2 managers and 1 other employee (who didnt know how to work l and g) i was swamped! and the phone was ringing off the hook. at one point some one wrote a check and had the numbers right but wrote the words out for 2 hundred less. i missed that and finished the transaction. something like 2 weeks later i was interrogated about it! ( did you know them? then why did you let it go?) they ended up rewatching the tape and said if it happened again they would have to fire me but for now all i had to do was rego check training.

to this day i still get pissed off about that because had they not basically told me i would take a cut in hours if i didnt stay i wouldnt have. or if they had closed the store early, or put one of the managers in my department to help out it wouldnt have happened.
