The letter A

posted 15th Nov
We were not planning on a "theme" for names in our family.

My husband and our daughter both happen to have names that start with the letter A. It wasn't on purpose, it's just a name we loved. Now baby #2 is coming and if it is a boy we have two names we like, one starts with C and one starts with A. We are leaning towards the A name. My issue is that if we go with the A name will it look like a family 'theme'?

I never would have thought about it but it seems like a lot of people do a letter theme on purpose nowadays... online at least. Then if we have a third will we need to have a name that starts with A so they're not "left out"? Because I don't think I could find another one.

I don't really have a first initial because I have a long greek name that starts with E but I go by a nickname that was given to me as a baby that starts with L so neither one is really my initial because I use both.

I don't think it matters, honestly. Don't pass up a name you love just because it happens to start with a certain letter. I don't think using another A name sets you into a theme, either - it's not like you're doing 5...6....7 names all starting with A. I used to worry about the same thing since my sons name starts with a C and my top girls name does also - but screw it, I'm not giving up something I love because other people might see it as a theme or the fear that one kid will feel left out. I doubt any child would be hurt because their name starts with a different letter and if that IS the case, there is seriously something wrong there other than a name, lol.

theme names are tacky in general. ALL 1 letter drives me crazy.

We currently have an unintentional theme w/our two kids, but it will be broken with the 3rd.

We deliberately named my son Elliot after Elliott Bay in Seattle.

However, after living away from Seattle for about 6 years, We'd both forgot there is a Piper's Creek pretty close to where we used to live.
Now, both of our kids are named for 2 bodies of water in Seattle. We were thinking of continuing the theme even though we never set out to have one, but Really?!?! Think about it in my case. IF we ever move back to seattle, and all 3 of my kids have this, They run the risk of constantly being asked "why are you named after stuff in town?" it's going to be weird and awkward for them.

Kids are not 1 unit. they are individuals who should not be grouped together by anything other than last name and love for each other. doing so doesn't make them closer, it doesn't make them get along better. What it does is make them even more likely to be compared against each other by non family member's they will always be just another A or C in your family. Just find a name you like that doesn't start with A or C and go with it. Give your children every possible chance to find their way and be their own person.

All of this is from knowing SO many kids who's parents did this. They all said they wished they'd weren't grouped together. that being the 3rd kid int he family w/the same letter made them feel less important. Like their family didn't really take the time to find a name for them.

Do your kids a favor and drop the crazy idea of theme names.
