How do I explain getting rid of our cat?

posted 15th Nov
To make a long story short, we need to get rid of our cat. I'm trying to find a better home for her, but I'm concerned with how to explain it to my 2 yr old. She loves the kitty, and I feel so guilty, but the cat really has to go.

Explain to her the cat will go to a new home and s/he will be taken care. Tell her the cat is causing problems and needs to go

My mom always told us the cat was going on vacation. Yeah... it was lying. but after a while we stopped asking about it.

We need to do the same thing.   Neither of us want to get rid of our cats, but we simply can't keep them. I just don't know how to break it to DS.

My daughter was almost three when we had to give ours away. She totally forgot about it and she is a huge animal lover. Maybe your lo won't notice either since they are only two.

lol. I dunno why she even likes the thing - she tells random strangers about her "mean kitty". I thought of just telling her kitty was outside somewhere (she lived outside for a few months but had to come back in b/c she kept getting into the neighbor's house), but she'd be constantly asking where the cat was. I guess I'll try the whole "the kitty went to stay with ________" .... or the vacation thing. I think she'd be satisfied with that.

not yet.   I'm hoping my friend's sister will want her, she is next on my list of people to ask.

My parents did this with a rottweiler we had for a few years. He just came up the driveway one day while I was playing in the yard and I ran inside screaming, "WOLF!!!"

He ended up becoming a family pet but we moved to a house that was next to a busy road and he needed a lot of room to run. I think he actually did get taken to a farm though. I'll have to ask about it now that I'm old enough to know the truth... lol.

My sister came to stay with us for a while and she brought 2 cats with her and Reise was 17 months when she left and I thought he was going to be really upset because he LOVED those cats but he didn't even seem to notice. Although sometimes he still tries to play the game with our cat he used to play with one of her cats but our cat is scared of him haha.
