How much can your 2 year old say?

posted 14th Nov
Reilly is a little over 2 1/2 and isn't talking nearly as much as I thought she would be by now.
She has a therapist coming starting in two weeks but this is about all she can say as of yet.
Don't kids starting talking a lot more than this by 2 1/2?

She can say things like
Reilly up
Reilly down
Please (more like pees)
tagu (thank you)
No
Yes
Potty
wipe
and can name all of the family.

She can technically say a lot of words but doesn't really put any of them together. And for the most part she can repeat any word you say but doesn't actually know what they mean
Does she sound like she is on track or do you think the therapist is going to think she is behind too?

I'm not sure. All kids are different I know that.
DD is 28.5 months and she has been talking in sentences since a little before she turned two.
At her 2 yr appointment I made a list of everything she could say and the pedi said that it was above average.

I think as long as she IS talking and it seems like she's progressing, everything will be okay...But it's always a good idea to talk to someone if you're concerned!

Good luck mama!

My daughter is A little older, turns 3 December 24th. I can't think of many words she can't say. She has full conversations with me.

I don't think she sounds behind. My 1st didn't really start talking a lot until about three. Now he won't stop talking!

I think that sounds fine. My son says a lot of little words, but he's not really into putting much together yet.

My daughter is 2 and 3 months and she says a lot of stuff. She can form sentences. She says things like "bubba eat cereal" "I tired" "me hold it" "me no like it" "me turn" "bubba did it". I think my son was a late talker though.

See that's the thing. She isn't really learning anything   And most of what she says is nothing more than a 2 work sentence and she only half way says it   It's so exasperating! I want to be able to have convos with her like all the other girls on here   I hate that I can't figure out what she wants. At this point she just drags me around the house and points at what she wants.
I will then try and get her to say what ever it is and she can usually say it back but will forget it immediately.

Some kids develop differently. She probably excells in something besides talking, right? Even if she is determined to be "behind", she's young enough that she might go from single words to sentences over night.

Don't worry so much. Just keep talking to her, get her to interact with you, and try doing a running dialouge of your day. She'll be fine mama

Maybe, you can try teaching her a few ASL signs, to help her communicate better?
If she takes you and points, she knows what she wants, she just can't express it, and signs might be able to help her out!

I think my LO talks too much! I suppose not one to say what's "normal" for a 2.5 yr old's verbal communication. My daughter will be 3 in February, and speaks in sentences. She doesn't always pronounce the words correctly, but we know what she means. As soon as she went to pre-school, her vocab and overall communication skills just increased immensely. DD is almost 2 1/2 and says 3-5 word sentences and she learns really quick, but not all kids are the same. My friend has a son who turned 2 the beginning of september but he only says a few words and only to his mom.
