Technology vs Old School
posted 14th Nov
Contemplating buying my DD the leap pad 2.Do you think it's just as stimulating for a Child to learn from learning toys as it is from books? I love to read and it makes me sad that books seem to be getting replaced with technology. (nook, leap pad,innotab...etc.) What do you think of the way things are now vs the way you learned growing up?

I think it's just as effective, even my DR told me it was good that my son was playing educational games on my Ipad.

We read a crap ton of books, seriously. We're getting our daughter the leap pad 2, and I don't feel bad about it. We'll still read real books, but I think it'll be an awesome supplement.

It is beneficial for children to learn to use technology since it is quickly taking over society. They will be expected at a young age in school to know how to use computers and other forms of technology.

I prefer books right now, but my son is only one and can't really play educational games lol. I just don't like how extremely dependent this generation is on technology. My son is going to grow up playing outside like I did, not hibernating and sitting on the computer all day every day

i think it would be good to do, its not like you are completely throwing books off the face of the earth, i'm sure you still have plenty "old school" style stuff lying around to read occasionally, but the technology is good too. my daughter started kindergarten this fall, and they go to the computer lab!!! i never ever have even let her use the computer at home. to me its not something for kids to just play with the standard computer, but a device meant for children that's appropriate for the childs age group, sure why not. prepare them for the technology they will be faced with over their lifetime. plus you can't beat having anything educational and fun at the same time ;)

I actually just submitted a project on the topic of technology with preschoolers lol yes I believe it's very beneficial in this day & age You can still encourage the love of reading through live books but using technology is another advantage to learning as well.

I prefer old school. I refuse to get a Nook or Kindle because I love my books! I don't think sitting around playing glorified video games promotes better or faster learning. It does promote laziness tho, imo.

I feel that way too. I guess having the right balance of both is good.

My one friend is like this in that she wouldn't allow her *now 6 year old* access to a computer, non physical books, etc etc/ Well now in the first grade, they do a decent amount of computer stuff in her class, and she is behind because she has no idea about the basics. The fact is in an ever changing world non tech is vanishing.

I'm curious to see the results of different types of learning on this and future generations. IMO, you have to find a balance.
Our LO has been using an iPad since 3 and has computers at preschool. She LOVES it and I think it has helped her learn some concepts faster as the apps are really fun.
I think the leap pad or similar (I don't know the product) is a great idea. It is also a great tool at a restaurant!

I like both...However I refuse to buy my 11 year old video games. They are making kids lazy

I like both methods. I think as parents we need to make sure that kids are learning the "oldschool" way just as much and the "new" way of ipads and innotabs Leap pads etc...
My kids love the educational apps on their ipads and love to read on them and on the e-reader as well.
But they also read real books and do nightly work (weekends) as well in workbooks to keep up with their learning capacity.
But these new gadgets are really awesome, and even more so for those kids who love to play and not learn at home, and dont realize that by using these educational toys that they are learning. lol

If you allow unrestricted access sure.
