re: Technology vs Old School

posted 15th Nov
I wonder how people felt when the telephone was first invented. I'm sure it was a similar feeling to this technology debate.

Personally, I avoid most new technology. We don't even own a video game or a smart phone, hell, we don't even have cable. I prefer the old-school way of teaching, but I know it works best with my daughter. YOUR child may do better with electronic things- all kids learn differently, so what works for one kid may not work for another.   The thing is, my kid is too rough on everything, if I bought her something fancy, it'd end up busted in 20 minutes hahaha

We're a pretty technology savvy family I would say. As for video games not being good, you should see what they can do for an Autistic child, very helpful... with reading and coordination and the list goes on. Any kid will spend to much time on one thing if allowed. My daughter could master the PC at 3, for her 4th birthday she got an Ipod touch and some app cards as well as a leapfrog tablet thing(which she rarely uses) I think it's important to know all about this stuff and know how to get around a comp by age 4, which here is when they can start Junior kindergarten. My kids don;t sit on their butts much at all, some days I wish they did, we don't even have cable... and reading is something still done daily. I love to read.

my daughter is the same way...shes in 4 k and it felt good when the teacher said she is the only person in her class that can recanize every letter of the alphabet and the sounds for the letters..i think that comes from her games..all of her games are educational

My husbands little borther is autistic and video games have not done good for him really at all. I know it's probably because his parents allow to much video games. But this kid plays ALL day. never gets off.. he's obese aswell because he does not move around and he will get violent if he comes to our house and we tell him he has to wait to play his games till our son is at nap (He is 12 so his games are not for 3 years olds to be around.) He doesn't want to talk about anything other then games either. He is very obsessed. I'm not against video games.. but I do think moderation is key.. and I think starting them to young isn't a good thing.

This is the only thing I want to avoid with technology. Other than that, I think it is wonderful.

My son is 3 and we don't allow games at all for his age. At age 2 he knew all the sounds of the alphabet and at 2 and a half he learned how to write all his uppercase letters. And now he just turned 3 and is learning to write all his lower case letters. Which is pretty good cause most kids can't write at that age. If parents work with their children they can learn their letters.. I don't think the issue is lack of games.

Well you were going to say what I was going to  ..technology is awesome but those who depend on it to teach their chidlren crack me up. Now you can use it and teach them, give them a mixture of both. I read to my daughter every day, real books!! She is 13 months and loves to be read to

I agree.
Although my kids play games, they have their own laptops, ipods and ipads.
But my middle dd was around 2 when she started writting her letters too. And she startedreading by herself around 3ish.
I always did workbooks with my kids. I started them really young. DD is 4 and in kindergarten and is the only kid in theclass who can write her whole alphabet and she reads at a grade 1-2 level. She is a really smart kid, but I allow video games that are not educational as well.

But they have access to them whenever they please as long as school work and chores are done. They play unlimited games and watch unlimited tv. I have no issues with it at all. But they also play sports a few times a week and are super active, every day. They play in the yard somedays, but its getting to cold for that here lol and I dont mind keeping them in, in the winter months at all, they get out at school and still do sports in the winter. lol

But keeping up with old school learning is still big in my house as well as using technology.

Yup, I defanitly think moderation is key. I'm not to big with technology for my son but I don't judge others who are.. however I have seen people way to focused on technology and I have seen negative side effects in kids because of it. I'm not anti-gaming or any of that either. I don't allow video games for my son but when he's older I will let him play a bit with a time limit. My husband is a huge gamer and he even says he wishes his parent put a time limit and stuff.. because he seriously used to have like a video game addiction and didn't wanna do much else. Now we both don't let our son play and won't till he's older and my husband doesn't play games unless it's our sons nap or bed time as I said earlier. Also my husband has a 12 year old brother who is autistic and video games has not done good for him at all... it's very sad to see. Again.. his parents let him play games pretty much morning till night...

I'm def not judging parents who use technology in moderation. Obviously my son is only 3 so I'm not going to get him his own laptop and ipad or any of that. I feel he's way to young. When he's older we will allow things in moderation. Right now I feel learning and being productive with me is best, and it has proven true and to work with MY son. I'm not going to judge what other people do with their kids.

True. I live off of my technology gadgets all day long when my kiddos are in school. lol and when they go to bed. But I am far from a lazy parent. lol

I still teach my kids the old way of learning, and we are all very active and I am an active parent involved in every inch of their lives lol No matter what. lol

I know some lazy parents, and I dont get it at all. lol
