i bought my 3.5 year old a nintendo 3DS, i dont see the harm in it, my son plays xbox and leapster but we thought we'd get him the 3DS and skylanders/angry birds so he leaves my ipad alone lol

Depends on the maturity of the 4.5 yr old and how well he/she takes care of the other toys he/she already has.

My niece got one for her 4th birthday. We've considered getting one for DD (turned 4 in Oct) since DS (7) is getting one but she's not very careful wit breakable things

My dd got one last Christmas and she was 4+2mos. She loves it still. She mostly takes pictures and edits them though. She's ok with games but prefers the camera on it haha. She has the dsi3d.

My niece has one, she got it when she was 4, my DD got one last year for Christmas at 5. They definitely were worth the buy!!! I highly recommend you do buy one lol good for road trips or keeping LO quiet during appointments, etc

We got our 4 year old one for his fourth birthday, we got him a DSi second hand for like £50 and got him Mario Kart for it, he loves it.

My dd got one when she was 2.5 yrs old. She got my older dd's when she got a new one. We gave that one to her and she did awesome with it, so we invested in a new one for her for her 3rd birthday, and she is now 4 (was in July) and its in better condition then my 10 yr old dd's. lol
But my 4 yr olds ipod and ipad and laptop are in better condition then my 10 yr olds.
Its up to you and how well you think your child will care for it. etc....But its something that you can always keep up so they need to ask for it when they want it and then give it back to you when they are done, then you can monitor the use of it as well make sure its not being thrown dropped etc....
