water breaking/prolapse cord

posted 14th Nov
I know I am being a worry worm but.... My water broke with my 2nd at 28 weeks and I delivered within a couple of hours. I am afraid of my water breaking again, and the cord prolapsing as I lived an hr away from the hospital. How common is this (prolapse) if your water breaks before term? I know I know, I need to stop worrying but I can't, I think its the hormones.

It's more common if you're early, and it's more common if you're water is broken. If your water breaks you're supposed to try NOT to walk around because the idea is that the baby is small, so the cord can slip around the baby where as if it were larger and in place it would be fine.

Realistically, it's uncommon to go into labor that early, even less common to actually have your water break, and then the odds of having a cord prolapse are even smaller.

I'd try not to worry.

my son came at 25 weeks due to IC. The docs broke my water because i was fully dilated and they didn't want to risk me rupturing unattended. His cord prolapsed and i was knocked out for an emergency c-section with a classical incision. Not a fun time considered the NP had to stick her whole hand up "there" to hold him up off of his cord until the other docs could get to him through the incision. glad i was out for the majority of it.

Thats scary and I have heard a few stories like this where they have to stick their hand inside of you to keep the baby off of the cord. How is he doing? When my water broke with my 28 weeker I was only 1cm dilated when it happened so I guess there wasn't much of an "exit" for it to go through. I was texting my friend right after it happened and she told me to lay down bc of the cord prolapsing, back then I had no idea what she was talking about.

He is great! he will be 10mo old on Tuesday and 7mo adjusted on the 30th of this month. He can roll onto his tummy and sits almost indepentantly. He has some tone issues in his hamstrings (tightness) and when he tries to compensate to take the strain off those muscles he tips over, otherwise he would be able to sit on his own. He weighs about 18lbs now and is as healthy as a horse. From all i read, his case is in the minority. He had no major health issues while in the NICU, no infections, no surgeries and really never even lost any weight. he has no developmental delays as far as we can tell and he is pretty much inline with what his occupational therapist believes he should be doing at this point so we are very fortunate.
