re: Are natural pregnancies a thing of the past?

posted 14th Nov
I like it. Think of the implications when it comes to tubal ectopic pregnancies. Both the mother and baby could be saved if the zygote/embryo could be reimplanted into this device. There would also be no reason for abortion for the physical health of the mother anymore. You have cancer and need chemo or you will die but you can't go through chemo when you are pregnant? Reimplant the fetus into the machine.

I wonder if they would be able to hook preemies up to this sort of thing. I honestly think it would be pretty amazing if they could save 16-20 weekers without major health problems. As for making babies this way, if it works and it's safe, I don't see the issue. A baby doesn't have to grow in your womb for you to love/bond with him or her.

I agree with this!

I do, too. I think it could possibly lower the viable gestation age, I know a lot of places it's 24 weeks.

This would be good for women who can't have children, but then again I'm afraid what this would lead to. I wouldn't do it I'd rather go through pregnancy the old fashioned way even though I dreaded morning sickness.

I don't see this ever being inexpensive enough for someone to do for convenience's sake. Honestly, I really don't see it ever being cost effective to do over surrogacy. Considering how much it costs just grow embryos for five days in a lab, I cannot imagine the costs associated with a full term lab birth. Just because it can happen doesn't mean it's practical enough to become common practice.

I bet IVF was pretty damn creepy when people first learned about it, heh.

I agree to an extent... It'll never be "cheap", but remember that CD players were over 1000 bucks when they first came out. Technology evolved and they found more cost effective and better ways to do things.

I didn't/don't think ivf is creepy.

Growing a child in a fake uterus outside of a human body for a nine month duration is very creepy.

It's just another step away from being human, but that's just my opinion.

What's not creepy about fertilizing/growing a "baby" in a petrie dish? Then you stick them in the freezer until you are ready to use them...

if this happens, eventually evoloution will play a role and there could be a chance we wouldnt even be able to reproduce naturally anymore..

i read an article talking about induction and elective c sections and how eventually our bodies whont "know how" to go into labor anything because we pump women full of oxytocin to get their labors going.

i will be sure to tell my girls the importance of natural birthing : ) hopefully i birth my grandbabies so i wont have to worry!
