What kind of stops does it let you change? like 1/3?

I'm at work, but I"ll check on it when I get home. I dont know off the top of my head, I rarely use it.   I need an electronic one!

I think you'd be a lot happier with a longer focal length prime like a 50mm or an 85mm, though an 85mm will be pretty much unusable indoors. The bummer about being on a nikon is that you can't get the VERY cheapest 50mm because of it's lack of AF motor.

I know... If I was more comfortable manually focusing, but with kids/babies, they're too fast for me. ha ha.

Thank you guys soooo much. I just have to buckle down and really learn my camera and it's settings in order to master the picture.

Biggest issues are

color (which I supposed I can do in LR, but I NEVER use it, so I have no idea what settings to use to make colors pop!),

Shoot in RAW

Raise my AF so I dont have too much blur.

I would never suggest trying to manually focus on any humans honestly lol. What a pain in the butt, especially if you want to shoot at wider apertures.

When you feel you have color issues, what do you mean? Do you think it's a WB thing or what? And by raising AF do you mean .. shutter speed?

Maybe it's the wrong term.. I can never spell it right Aperture. To get the bokeh. But It also makes it easier to shoot in lower light. I never play with the shutter speed, I just use the M (manual setting) on my camera.

See, this is where my issue is. I dont know the technical side. I've always played it by ear, and that always worked "well enough" for me, but its not anymore. I want more.

And for color, I mean my colors are flat... not vibrant at all.

And every time I play with white balance, it just makes all the pictures yellow, no matter what setting it's on. lol

Okay so you want to shoot wider.. I get that. Though unfortunately your lenses are a little limiting when it comes to that. But if you shoot in manual, how are you not controlling your shutter speed?

I dont I guess. I play with f stop and the ISO... I guess that's a problem huh?

If you're shooting in full manual it will want you to choose your aperture and shutter speed. The ISO too but otherwise, it's going to default to whatever SS the camera is set on. The SS is the most flexible of all your settings.

I know you all are probably going *head desk* about now.

Should have learned these things a long time ago. Cocky of me starting out. Then I just got busy and never bothered.

But I care now and want more. Thanks for your help.

I always say it's never too late. Have you ever picked up the book 'understanding exposure'?
