Unsure how to help my son
posted 14th Nov
I've always know that my son was a little different, but as he's gotten older its become more obvious. He's 8 now and it's really starting to affect him in school.
We recently had an iep done and based on their findings he seems to have LD which effects his written expression. They are now making accommodations for him in that area. But, he needs some type of therapy, he also needs a diagnosis of some sort so that we can better attack the problems. Idk if tha makes sense, I don't want a label but I do want to know what's going on with my kid. Kwim.
His doctor gave me a referral today for a counseling session which is bs IMO, I just can't see how a counselor will do anything for him, she's not qualified.
I feel like if I knew exactly what to ask my ped for a referral for I'd be better off but I have no idea.
Ugh, I'm just frustrated and bitching.
I'm going to explain what I see with my son and maybe someone will be able to direct me in the right direction
Thanks..
He's never played with toys in an imaginative way
Can't create an elaborate game play.
must control every aspect of any games, controls all dialogue etc
No friends, can't relate, wants to fit in but can't grasp how to,has no understanding of when others aren't interested,
limited conversations, no give and take
Fine motor skills way behind
Very intense, sensitive, emotional
Changes every convo back to his topic
Other kids can't relate bc he doesn't even attempt to discuss things they care about, just kind of wants others to do what he wants
Great voc
High iq in everything except written
Loves things like word play, puns, bit of a dry humor

Can you have him evaluated for Asperger's?

Who does that type of testing?

I'd ask your pedi for a referral to a developmental pediatrician. I can't help with a diagnosis because IDK.
My son has CP, seizures and a slew of other things and has a VERY hard time relating to children his own age, he would rather talk to adults because they understand him better I guess.
But I'd ask for a referral to see one and I'd ask soon, I'm sure it'll take a little while to get it.
Best of luck!

Sounds to me like autism or aspegers.

Sounds a lot like Asbergers to me, or high functioning autism.

that sounds like my nephew and he has high functioning aspergers/autism.

Well I had issues with my motor skills and I couldn't grasp a pencil right, they sent me to do occupational therapy and it helped a ton. You could try that for his fine motor skills. He sounds like he may have Asperger's. A psychologist could probably help you diagnose the other issues.

It sounds like Aspergers. It's a high functioning autism.
A referral to see a developmental pediatrician and also a child psychologist are appropriate and would be the ones to give a diagnosis. The ones around here are located at the major children's hospitals.
I hope you get some answers soon.

He's going to have OT through his iep. He holds a pencil really weird and also can't do small motor things like buttons
