School & ADD/ADHD

posted 14th Nov
My honey's 6 year old has ADD & ADHD, he's in kindergarten for his 2nd time. He excells in his math, but he's seriously behind in english. He's dyslexic on top of it. He still doesn't know all his letters, he has trouble with his basic words and still can't put together simple sentences. It just doesn't process in his mind, like there's a block right behind his eyes not letting any of it in. He seems to want to get it, he just can't. He's about to have his meds upped AGAIN, so hopefully that will help but until then we're tying to find something that will help bhim learn and all that. I don't know what to do half the time. They won't do an evaluation until March when he turns 7, but by then he might be just TOO far behind. Stupid state of Georgia has a thing where the child can only go through a grade twice before being passed on regardless of how bad they're failing. He doesn't need to be in grade K for a 3rd time, but he doesn't need to be passed on just to fail again because he doens't know any of it.

HELP!

we have that here I think it is called No Child Left Behind. If they do pass him and he isn't ready you might want to look into sending him to summer school or getting a tutor over the summer to try to help him catch up. Hoping the best for the little man.

do they not have special needs classes or at least an assistant to sit with him and help him along?..it seems like he's just being forced to average when he needs a little more help...have you guys looked into the school system and maybe have a meeting with his teacher, the principal and a special needs teacher and see if they think he needs it or not?..

Is he in any special needs classes? I have ADD & Dyslexia. The meds for ADD on top of special classes helped me sooo much.

No he isn't in any special needs class, they won't evaluate him until he's 7.

They had a P-T meeting with the counselor & princapal today and that's what was said (referring to above about not till he's 7)

WTF? That doesn't sound right to me. They need to catch the problem ASAP. I was tested for LD in 1st grade and I had special classes from there on up. I would be putting up a fight for it especially if he is falling behind, that isn't right.

Do they have ISP or IEP classes?

I would look into that, and if not at that school then at a different one.
My 10 yr old is in an ISP class, it has kids from kindergarten up to grade 6 in it. They all work at their own pase.

Are schools here dont hold kids behind at all, but they do skip kids up to appropriate grades if needed. lol

ISP has worked wonders on my dd for her MID and ADHD and compulsive behavior issues. A more controlled class with a teacher who is trained to deal with kids who have learning or just behavioral disibilities.

Its her 3rd year in the class(or second ) lol wow cant remember and she is slowly being intergrated back with her peers now, since she has brought most of her grades up in her problem areas, but still lacks the appropriate level in reading and spelling.

Its weird they are waiting to evaluate till 7. Is that through the school or through a pedi?
We had all our first testing done through the school which they needed to send to the pedi who overlooked it all, then set her up to be re=evaluated with a specialist then a diagnosis came of that and she was set up with someone to help her, which got her into the ISP class, it took a few months only.
