Assistance for single-moms?

posted 14th Nov
I live in Texas and am a college student. I've got a one year old little boy, who's my entire world.

Right now we're living with my parents but, I just can't handle it. I love them and I know it's easier to stay here and go to school but, I just can't. My mom is always telling me I'm such a bad mom because I don't parent her way. My dad tells me he's gonna take LO from me if I try to leave. I just can't live with the stress and the unhappiness. I'd rather work, support LO and myself and go to school.

That being said, is there anything I can get on JUST for single-mothers in school? Aside from HUB, Section 8, SNAP?
There's some really nice low-income apartments I'd like to get into but, I don't even know if I could afford those with a minimum wage job.

Thanks, it's all extremely appreciated.

When I first moved out I moved into an apartment complex that had something called government rated apartments. If you fit the income guidelines your rent would be cheaper, the whole complex wasnt like this just certain apartments in it. It wasnt section 8 or anything like that. I got a 2 bedroom for like $525 a month when a two bedroom was normally like $825

There are some apartments like that here. They're ''low-income" apartments and rent is "income-based".

I'm wondering if I could afford that on a full-time, minimum-wage job? I get child-support too but, I'm also a full-part-time student (9 hours of night classes).

Would I be eligible for food-stamps? I already receive WIC but, could I drop that and apply for food stamps or are they two totally different things?

Do you have a job yet? Id first find a job and figure out what you can afford. I was working full time and going to school. But I also made SO pay half the rent. WIC and food stamps are completely different. Im sure you will be able to get food stamps making minimum wage. Im not sure about rent, I would call around local apartments and ask how much rent it.

I'm actively seeking employment! If all else fails, I'll fall back on my Nurses' Aide license and go back to ''wiping ass'' (why not, I do it everyday for a toddler... only, it's much, much, much worse with adults.) But, at least the pay is decent, more than minimum wage (8.75-9.50 hrly)

And, my boyfriend and I agreed that since we both have small children (I have a one year old, and he has a six year old) we won't be moving in together unless we end up getting married. Besides, I wanna do this on my own, I've never stood on my own feet before and it's important to me that I do before I get married again.

I would see what you would make first, start there. I know I could have paid rent alone if SO wasnt there. BUT you also have to remember everything else you will have to pay for too. Utilities, if you have a car, gas, insurance...if you dont get approved for food stamps, food. I would def get a job, and go from there. Good luck! I hope everything works out for you, that doesnt sound like a good situation to be in.

Thanks! I've worked for them before and was making 8.75. They have a shift I'd like to get, you work Saturday and Sunday, 16 hours each day and if you're on time and stay your whole shift, you're credited your 8 hours so that it comes out to full time. You get the benefits, etc.

I'd like to get that and if I could, it's right near the apartments I'm wanting to get into. But, it's going to take time. Job first, save money, then apartment.

While I wait, I want to learn to coupon and stretch my dollars. I want to be able to spoil LO but, I also want him to have everything he needs before everything he wants.

Luckily, my car is paid off so, all I'd have to worry about is insurance/gas/maintenance (like I said before, the place I wanna work is on the same street as the apartments so, that would save on gas! fingers crossed*)
Then utilities, I'm gonna do my best to keep it low... Things unplugged, energy-saver bulbs.

Well you are not really doing this on your own with all that gvt assistance-I don't mean it a mean way-I am a single mom. I no way can afford to go to school, I have been working since my girl was born without any gvt assistance-you boyfriend should be helping you out and probably not expect tax payers to pick up the tab or you get a job.

My boyfriend is a single dad with his own responsibilities, I'm not going to expect him to help me when he has his own responsibilities. IF we were married, it'd be different. But, we aren't planning on moving in together BECAUSE we both have small children.

And, I don't want my boyfriends help. He's not my BD. I'm with him for companionship, not so he can support me. I am going to school so I can get a better job to support LO and future babies. I'm sorry you don't go to school, as a single mom, you could get it paid for AND day-care assistance to get a degree to a higher-paying job. My school is paid for by a pell-grant and financial aid. Thank God because, if it wasn't I couldn't afford it. And my LO deserves better than to scrimp by on a minimum wage job. I'm actively seeking employment while I am a full-part-time student and a full-time single mom. My BD lives in another state so LO NEVER sees him. My boyfriend does help with LO but, I don't expect, or want, him to cover my living expenses/groceries/bills/etc. That's not his place yet. He does so much for us already, I refuse to ask him for that too.
