"Adopting" Elderly. WDYT?
posted 14th Nov
I want to call assisted living/nursing homes around here & see if they is anyone without family/lonely and "adopt" them.
Maybe letting DS (4) visit, make them things, visit with them myself, get them things, and take them out if they are able and allowed.
Is that doable? Would it be joyous/generous or creepy to "adopt" a stranger?
I hate to think of someone being lonely & it would teach DS about embracing people and doing things & giving your time to others.
What do you think?

You should call a local retirement home or an assisted living home and ask them

Sounds like a great idea. I would just call and let them know what your situation is and ask where they could use help. They typically have volunteer coordinators. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure there's someplace that you can go through to do that sort of thing. I remember an episode of Seinfeld, where they all "adopted" old people, lol. Elaine's old lady had a huge goiter on her neck that she couldn't look straight at, haha

I think its awesome.
I've adopted a few elderly ladies in an assisted living home and they LOVED it. Especially since many of them didn't have regular visitors. And they absolutely loved when I brought my kids. Mine were in the Alzheimer's unit so sometimes they remembered me, sometimes they didn't. But it was so, so worth it.

We have things at the long term care, who don't have family, where we visit them every saturday with our kids. Maybe they do something like that, there? I'd call and ask.

i can answer most questions since i work in one. you would have to call the activities director. convalecent and assisted living places will have a department.. before you bring treats check with thier diets. being able to take them out depends on the place. i know some insurences wont allow itand some disabilities the dr wont allow it. if your more into taking them out look into assisted.. if your more into visiting go with convalecent. and its not wierd its very common
