I was in a similar situation with my ex husband. Except when I left for good, there were no "love" feelings left. If that makes sense? The only reason I stayed with him as long as I did was because of the kids. That wasn't fair to me, or the kids.
My ex husband was very verbally and mentally abusive. After we would argue, he would tell all of our friends that I was crazy. He told them once that I took a shovel and chased him around the yard with it saying I was going to kill him.. I'm 4"11, I can barely hold a shovel without tripping over it...how the hell am I going to run with it?! lol Toward the end, he became physically abusive. That was the breaking point...if he could do it once, he'd do it again. So I left. Sure, it was hard to leave...and hard to deal with, but I knew I had to do it.

I'm sure you have plenty of people to vent to, but I'm here if you need another. <3
