Teaching three year olds how to play....

posted 13th Nov
board games.

How do you do it?

My best friend bought the twins Candy Land & Chutes and Ladders.

I've attempted to play with them, but I don't think they understand the concept that you have to wait your turn when playing a board game, lol.

You just keep trying, have them wait their turn for a few rounds then let them play however they want. DD is almost 4 and doesn't understand board games yet, but she loves playing cards and is rather good at it.

Candy land is good for them but chutes and ladders might be more appropriate next year. My son is 4 and learning the 1-1 counting skill while moving the piece is something to be learned!

This is a great opportunity to model/teach how to take turns.

I dislike chutes and ladders. It's the game that never ends. Once you start playing it, the chutes are not your friend.

Candy land, we sit and take turns.

Aww I love chutes and ladders. It was mine and Ava's fav game to play. We started playing it at 2 yrs old.
Just keep working at it. Its just like anyone else learning a new game to play.

Right now me and my kids 10 and 4 are into playing the game of life Monopoly and scrabble. And teaching my 4 yr old how to play Risk. Which she is finally catching on after about 1 week of teaching her.

Make sure you play it at a time when they are not tired or hungry, or super hyper, a time of day when they are just content about listening and paying attention.

Quoting Coupon Lady:" Aww I love chutes and ladders. It was mine and Ava's fav game to play. We started playing it at 2 yrs ... [snip!] ... they are not tired or hungry, or super hyper, a time of day when they are just content about listening and paying attention."

They did okay with it tonight, well, Evan did.

Devon picked like two or three cards, then walked away from the table, lol. Evan got a little better, I made him take his time and "read" the cards, and had him show me the colors on the board that were the same on his card.
