No not really. Until you get to kings most of it's a fairytale. Kings is sort of up in the air because we know some things happened, But outside data casts doubt they happened the way the bible states it does. Even the very nature of monotheism in israel has almost no proof to it, and what we have seen in digs is that israel/judah were very very pagan. It can be a good book, but my issue is when people try to force others to live according to it, or pick and chose what in it they follow.

The world at large was very pagan until Catholicism extended its reign of terror. Paganism still exists in large in underdeveloped countries with little acces to a dictated education. It is something commonly practiced in less civilized areas without structured cities, hospitals and other such sources.

The first many books of the bible are on the beginning of time as Christianity dictated it. Much of those books are allegory and creation art tales. The genesis of the world is something pretty much all religions ponder and have created an explanation for. The books that comprise most of the bible were set in their present times and documenting of what was going on in the world in those areas.

I can't STAND people who condemn others. I don't think there is one universal religion that was should all subscribe to. I think each should have his own spiritual virws that fosters some form of morality or guiding principals by which we live by. So anyone who tells me I'm going to hell for not adhering to their prescribed plan can GFT. But all that aside, I hold much respect for people who have strong beliefs and who attempt to follow a moral code. Likewise, I hold a rather low opinion of people who seem to be lacking any concept of morality.

I get extremely tired of the anger people voice when someone mentions they choose to follow the bible. Posters jump on these people like a rabid pack of hyenas. They go crazy. "oh, she said bible? Now I'm a rabid dog and can't respect her. In fact, neither can I even understand a single word she says any longer"

No one gives a flying smurf if she follows the Bible. We take great exception to her judging others based on it. Which is what her first several posts did until she started to backtrack.

You know there are adults who are capable of having sex with multiple partners who aren't chock full of STDs and pregnancies.

Case in point? Me. I've had 10 partners and never had an STD. I've only had two pregnancies and both were with my husband after we were married. As for the STDs, obviously you can only take my word for it but I'm married to someone who regularly gets tested every six months and his career could actually be affected if he were to pick something up nasty from me. We wouldn't let that happen because we have both always been smart with previous partners as well as one another.

It's not hard to avoid STDs and pregnancy. You can have sex with as many people as you like while remaining fairly safe. No, there's no way to prevent everything 100% but that goes for whether you have one partner or 100.

This isn't even a "moral" issue for me because I don't tie sex and morality together. I just think saying it's hard to have safe sex with multiple partners without dire consequences is a tad bit ridiculous.

I don't know, the Bible actually prescribes some pretty ridiculous punishments for people who sin. Fathers were even told to sell their daughters and things like that. It's more prevalent in the Septuagint and Old Testament though.

I never said it was hard to not get an STD. ?

It increases the likelihood plain and simple. Seems like a rather silly thing to argue about. Also, from the numbers I have seen a large people post about having slept with, 10 sounds fairly low.

And of course many promiscuous people will skate by, just as many smokers don't get cancer.

You know what spreads STDs? Sex, by golly. So naturally if you have one monogamous partner who is STD free, you aren't going to get an STD. But increase your number of partners, you increase your risk of exposure. Seems Luke a fairly simple concept to me, hell, it's been common medical knowledge since at least the seventies. Not everyone is going to be honest about whether they have something. In fact, I'd conjecture that most guys dying to just get into someone's pants no strings attached would not tell because of the humiliation and disgust they might be faced with. Condoms fail on a regular basis! Have any of you NEVER had a condom break inside of you? Because I have had it happen at least once with each guy I've been with (5).

That's how it as done back in the day. Historically accurate. Some countries sadly still practice these methods.

As for my responses on here? I enjoy having intellectually stimulating conversations and get easily irritated by bigotry and stupidity. Not talking about you Raptor, or mystic.

You know, I never argued anything. I tend to avoid arguments on BG. One look through my posting history and it's fairly obvious I don't engage in back-and-forths with people here unless it's a respectful debate that isn't saturated by sarcastic undertones (and that rarely happens).

Anyway, I didn't even mention this girl you keep bringing up. I couldn't care less if she gets her morals from the Bible. I have no issues with people believing in the Bible or discussing their beliefs here in this forum. In fact, I recognize that some people actually have to use the Bible as a guide to living better and if that's what makes them happy and keeps them doing well in life then by all means, read away. I read the Bible and didn't get much from it because I already had those standards in place (don't kill, lie, steal, etc.). That doesn't mean I have anything negative to say about those who choose to practice Christianity though.

As do I. Unfortunately people can't debate or discuss things without getting wound up. Politics are especially brutal here. Any time I make a political statement there's one poster in particular who knows I have no interest in going through this rigmarole again and again but she continues picking at things I say for the sake of being difficult. She very clearly gets genuinely worked up that people--oh my god--believe different things.

I do love a good debate though. But I don't get worked up.

I always bow out when the other person (or people) get worked up. I just can't be bothered with talking to a brick wall, you know? Debates are wonderful because they're a great way to expand your mind as well as learn new things. My current view of politics was mostly formed through debating others and learning from them as I went. These kinds of respectful debates are engaging and rewarding.

Unfortunately so many people get worked up, plug their ears, and start screaming like children.
