Welfare & Child Support at the same time?

posted 13th Nov
I lost my job a few months ago and when i went into the welfare office they told me if i wanted to receive cash assistance then i would need to put the father on child support. So I was wondering if he got put on child support would I be able to receive both welfare AND child support at the same time or would i be cut from welfare completely? I ask this because he makes little to Nothing so I know that his income alone will not help take care of our child at all while i am still job searching. Also would the state receive money from him first to pay off the 3 months that I'm on cash assistance before i can start seeing anything? I live in MA by the way.

Interested to know this for a friend. She's in the same situation.

You would receive your Child Support, and they would know how much you are getting and deduct it from your cash assistance.

ETA: You could be cut from cash assistance but only if you are getting as much in child support or more than you would on cash assistance.

Depends on where you live and how much you get from CS.

Here. The first $100 is yours. Anything MORE then that goes to the welfare system. So if you get $300 in cash assistance and $300 a month in child support. You'll see $100 of your child support.

So you would get $400 total?

That is not how they do it here in MN (from when I moved here after moving to ND for 4 months before I got a job.) and it is not how they do it in ND, while was at Job Corps.

Yep. You'd get $400 a month total in welfare, but technically your child's father is paying $300 of the $400.

Here they do it like I said above, deduct all of the CS. BD never paid it at the time so it made no difference to me.

I guess this is one of the only ways to guarantee child support lol. I'm sure the state probably goes after them sooner when they are "footing" the bill with cash aid.

In california they will take the CS except for $50. Tell her to go with what she gets more of.

I'm on cash assistance and my bd only pays $187 for c/s which I see none of, it all goes to the state.

at least where I live, if/or when my baby daddy starts paying CS whatever amount is what he owes goes to the county and I'd get about 50 on top of Cash aid. But obviously, if he pays more then what you get on Cash aid, you'd probably stop the aid and just have that.
