You don't think that is a problem? Their environment caters to them, so they do not know English in a mainly English speaking country? What if they needed to go outside of their neighborhood for anything? They would be unable to communicate, correct?

Yes, the employer is to blame as well, but the fact that these women would be doing it in another language, shows that they know what they are doing is wrong and are attempting to be secretive, IMO.

I think you may be too sensitive about this because youre married to someone from another culture, who's family does not speak English. I believe that people who mingle with people who speak mainly English, should attempt to communicate with them and absorb themselves with their new culture.

Nope..My husband has very little to do with his family..He's very Americanized so he doesn't have much in common with them...America is a melting pot and was founded on immigration...in some parts of the country English is not the main language spoken..i live in the most diverse Cory in this country i believe i read..i have many friends from all over the world..i find it very refreshing..most people know the basics anyways and I'm not surprised about what people in another language are saying and it doesn't inconvenience me to repeat myself to someone who had a hard time with English

I think a lot of it has to do with the clientele and businesses wanting to be inclusive. As a customer, I would be more likely to shop somewhere that was open-minded enough to at least attempt to have a sign in Spanish or whatever language, rather than "english only or gtfo". One of the only harbor freight stores in my city is in a predominantly and historically Latino community, and I think much of the Spanish language signs has to do with including all customers reflected in the community. I admit that i sometimes get annoyed when every single person speaks another language in a store that is supposed to be for all kinds of customers ( like goodwill or whatever), but I've noticed that it really depends on the area. I think it should be balanced and not completely one way or the other( completely just French or English only, for example).

Yes, people who come here should learn english. I don't have a problem with signs in other languages, I don't even have a problem pressing "1" for english. We as Americans should put some effort into learning other languages as well.

I don't know a single non-English speaking person who isn't trying to learn English. It isn't easy.

America does not have an official language, so until it does people really need to shut up. It's not like there are signs in ONLY Spanish or French or whatever and you have no English option. I live in Texas. There is a huge hispanic population here and there are a lot of signs in Spanish. It doesn't bother me because I'm not a racist smurf. My grandma didn't speak a word of English when she moved here from Germany 50 years ago. The funny thing is most of these people harping on "this is America, speak English!" can barely smurfing spell or use correct grammar. They're getting onto people for not speaking English and they suck at the language themselves.

To be fair... when I posted this, it was because Dh and I ran to Harbor Freight (A tool store) to pick something up (we live in Phoenix), and the signs were completely in Spanish. We had a difficult time finding what we needed. THAT bothered me, because we had to go ask for help. Its not because we're racist smurfs, but most of the people speak English here in Phoenix, although there are parts that are "overwhelmingly Hispanic" (quoting Greg Giraldo).

I didn't know until this thread that English was not the official language, and that is interesting. I believe though that we should adopt one soon, because if everyone runs around speaking different languages in the future, can you imagine how chaotic that would be? I mean.... keeping 15 people on staff at a hospital just to translate? It could get confusing.

Wanting people to speak English doesn't make you racist.

Living where I do, I run into a lot of people who cannot speak English, and most times it is not a huge issue. The only time I get frustrated is when it is at a restaurant or another place where they are providing customer service and we can't communicate. English is not an easy language to learn. Plus, it is always easier for someone to communicate effectively in their native tongue.

Now, there are instances where you can choose not to hire someone who cannot speak English because of safety concerns and it is not discrimination.

Well since lik 98 percent of americans speak it, I doubt that will be happening anytime soon :-P.

This is nothing new though, When my grandparents came to the country my grand father never learned a lick of english. He lived in a italian neighborhood, and got along without it. Whether he ever learned enough to get by outside of it I don't know. I was little when he died, and I don't remember him speaking any. I think that there is nothing wrong with catering to them because it's good business sense.

Its also good business sense to not alienate other customers. To specifically not have signs in English.... makes it difficult for the other "98%" to know where things are in the store. Why cater to such a small population of non English speakers then? N
Why not have signs in English AND Spanish? We won't go back because its difficult navigating the store and I'll drive a little out of the way for more convenience.

America is kind of a selfish country in that sense though. We don't teach our kids other languages for the most part. Spanish is only touched upon briefly. Most other countries DO teach English and a lot of that has to do with catering to the ego of Americans. I think it would do us all some good to learn another language instead of demanding that everyone learn ours. Sure I think there should be signs in English everywhere, but I don't think English should be our only accepted language.
