My mom (who lives with us) sat at the table where my 12 yr old son was at, and she had an unopened breakfast bar. He had a sandwich.
"Oh, what's that?"
"A breakfast bar."
"Can i have some?"
This is an ongoing thing with my son. If he sees any food item differently packaged, or in a "bar" form, he will want it. He plowed through my low-calorie diet bars. He's also in the habit of asking to take the last of anything he sees, no matter whose it is.
Is this common?
Not so sure aboutthe bar thing but i can tell you my 14 yr old SS is like a himan vacuum when it comes to food. He ate my sons lunch the other day because i put it on the counter while we peed. No joke.

Hes not being selfish. Do you portion his food for him or does he plate his own dinner?

I have always done up the kids plates but now i have to let the oldest do it because he just eats so much and his appetite is so weird. Now the 10 yr old is starting in too. My food bill cries a lot

I would just let him fix his own plate, thats what we do here, even my 4 yr old makes her own plate. They take what and how much they want, and if there is any left over we just put in the fridge for later or for school lunches etc.....
