How can you tell yourself at home how many centimeters dilated you are?

You don't. Leave it up to the doctors. There's no need to know how many cm you are anyways since it holds no weight until you are in active labor. Until then, dilation doesn't matter. You can be at 1cm, doesn't matter. You can be 4cm, does. not. matter.

Better off waiting for a Dr. to check. Never know the risk of infections etc.

You could tell yourself, if you knew how. But, there's a reason Doctors do it. It's safer and less risk of infection. It really doesn't matter how dilated you are until you're actually in labor.

You really have no business checking yourself. Sorry. You can labor at home for as long as you like but that's something you should be speaking with your doctor about. No one on BG is a doctor. We have plenty of nurses but no doctors.

Exactly what the other Mom's said. No need to check yourself.

The Dr.'s and hospitals usually say, depending on how far away you are from the hospital, wait until your contractions are at least 5 minutes apart consistently for 1 hour, or until you're unable to walk and/or talk through them.

ETA: Now that I see you're not due until January 1st, you have lots, and lots of time before you need to be worrying about it. Your due date is an estimate!

You'll also be able to judge on the time of day that you're in labour as to how long it will take you to get there. You will be most comfortable labouring at home as long as possible.

There is no need to check yourself.Dilation will not tell you when labor will start or how long labor will be.
But you can and despite what others are saying your risk of infection is lower then when a Dr does it.
I don't want to go into detail about how to check yourself for dilation but you can research it yourself.
If you do it make sure to wash your hands well before and after even if you wear gloves.
