melatonin

What age is it safe to give your child melatonin? My son is 2 1/2 and won't sleep anymore. No naps and he won't go to bed until like midnight no matter what I do. I have not given him any but someone recommended I try it out and see if it helps. I would prefer to avoid it if possible but he will not sleep even if I give him camomile tea D:
I have also tried sticking to schedules and routine like we always do but I think he might be getting his last couple of molars in and it has caused his sleep schedule to be off. Anyway, I don't even know if melatonin is even safe for toddlers.
Has anyone tried it? Would you say it's safe, or heck no?
Just wanting advice from different moms before even attempting it ever, since it was suggested. Thanks.

I give my 2.5 year old melantonin almost every night. Otherwise he only sleeps like 4 hours a night. I'd rather him get a full nights sleep! I only give him 1/4 of the pill though!

Did a doctor recommend it or was it something you heard was safe?
I could probably call is pedi and ask although, she is really into natural medicine over western medicine(though she is an MD) so I am sure she would say its safe. I am just paranoid I guess XD

Yeah his pedi said it was fine! Yeah he sleeps around 8 hours a night!

awesome! my son sleeps a full 8+ hours but he wont go to bed. Once I get him down he is good. I just don't know what else to get him on a normal sleeping schedule. He would stay up all night if he could.

its completely safe, its a natural thing already in your body, I give my son a 5 milligram chewable of it cause mine no longer would take naps at 2 and wouldnt go to bed til late late at night. His doc said its completely safe and it works like a charm  

Just beware,it can have weird effects on dreams . For me at least.

We give our 4yr old and 2 yr old some every once in awhile, Doctor said it was fine.
He said you can give kids up to like 10mg or more [He was just stating how safe/natural it is] we give them half of a 3mg pill.
